Come see what we do!

K-Bots Have Drive!

At the very beginning of today we had a mini meeting where we discussed how to improve the FLL tournament. Everyone really liked the great enthusiasm and dancing, and we have some good ideas on how to improve our organization for next time.

meeting

There was a lot of work done on our skills robot. We’re making the driving system and many people were working pretty hard at that. The wheels are drilled in and it should be wheeling soon.

driveThank you cards were written and delivered to the people who helped at the FLL practice tournament.  We find it easier to write thank you notes as a group.  We brainstorm ideas, and decide together how to put our thoughts into words.  It’s fun to use the whiteboard to compile our ideas.

old robotWe’re also cleaning up an old robot from ten years ago! It won the very first Greater Toronto regional for team 610. It was unearthed a while ago and has progressed from various shades of black and brown rust to a more presentable silver.

By the end of our meeting we had made significant progress on our Skills robot.  It was driving!

Here’s a video to prove it.

Multi-Tasking Tuesday

Today we worked on many different things.  Some of us were beta-testing programming, and others prototyped, and a few of us added the finishing touches to our bulletin board.  We use our bulletin board for communication amongst team members, and for raising awareness in the school. bulletin boardWe have put up our calendar, media coverage, some photos, folders with forms and newsletters, and now our very first edition of the K-Botics Quarterly.  Check it out for yourself!  We’re going to mail newsletters to our sponsors in the fall, winter, and spring.  We want everyone to be very informed this season!

Something special that we do, is to send thank you cards to our sponsors, friends and helpers to acknowledge contributions to our team.  We have a new design every year, created by the more artistic team members.  This year our thank you card robot is wearing a cool hat.

robot Maybe this was inspired by some of our knitted hats?JoshJosh has been wearing his new hat all day! little helperWe were glad to have a visiting member of the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. help us with our prototyping.  That new wheel that we used today made a big difference in our launching capabilities. launchWe also devised a plan for loading up our launcher with close to 20 balls.  We know that we are limited to three at a time for our competition, but it was fun to watch them all get launched at once.

Prototype: Launch Video

Here’s video of one launcher prototype being tested.

It’s looking pretty promising! Good job everyone.

Boom-de-yada!!

Two of our team members Henry and John came up with a fantastic idea for an “end of the year project”.  We are working on re-creating the Discovery Channel’s commerical “boom-de-yada” to fit Robotics themes for our team.

we love team spirit!

Today we all gathered wearing our purple shirts and our team toques to sing along.  We are grateful that the song is very repetitive, so it is easy for us to learn the tune.  Filming was lots of fun, and we will probably have a very funny blooper reel.

"we love to mentor" "we love to engineer!"
