Today marked a milestone in our season. This is the last day that we’re testing and practicing in the Transformix warehouse!
We practiced shooting A LOT!
The good thing is that we were also scoring A LOT!
At the end of the day we packed up our gear, disassembling our test rig…getting ourselves ready for St. Louis. Our programming/drive team is optimistic about how well we can perform in St. Louis. We’ll be playing in the Archimedes division with our friends 1114, 2056 and 781. We’re looking forward to a strong Canadian presence in the division.
K-Bots: enjoy the weekend off–do all your purple laundry! We’ll see you on Monday after school for a meeting and to finalize all the details. Tuesday we’ll meet at 7:15PM to load the bus.
K-Botics would like to thank our local media for covering the kickoff to the FIRST robotics season! We love to get the word out in our local community about the interesting things we’re doing at KCVI, and explain to everyone about how great the FIRST Robotics program is.
We are excited to have an article in the Kingston This Week newspaper
There’s a great, lengthy, feature story on us and our good friends the Cyberfalcons, FIRST team 3710 from Frontenac Secondary School in the Kingston EMC newspaper
and we were also aired on CKWS News.
Students: please remember to bring in any extra clippings you have so we can keep filling up our media binder and so we can post our news on bulletin boards around the school.
We had a great time today showing off our driving skills with the Kinect. Students and mentors for K-Botics and the Cyberfalcons (team 3710) were in attendance.
We showed off how easy it is to drive the robot around the room using the Kinect system.
“I really like driving the robot, it is like my pet!” -Rodrigo, grade 9
Some of our teachers gave robot driving a try.
Even one of our custodial staff gave it a whirl. He was a natural!
We’re excited to see how the Kinect will be incorporated into this year’s challenge. The countdown to Kick-Off is in full swing–28 days left!
Look at this! Popular Mechanics has talked about our roller claw design on their website. They showed a video of the claw in action. It’s exciting to be getting all of this media exposure.
Reporting live from KCVI. We are camped out, with 120 other people in the school basement for Relay For Life, a night of activities and fun aimed at raising funds and awareness for cancer research.
Our activities have included making a team banner…
Opening ceremonies where we heard from a cancer survivor and walked a lap of the track with cancer survivors….
Zumba dance lessons….
The luminary ceremony, where the luminaries were lit, and the gym was dark. We sat together and heard from another cancer survivor–a KCVI teacher, then walked another lap around the track.
It is particularly emotional for us this year since KCVI is grieving the loss of Mrs. Prentice, who lost her battle to cancer this spring.
We had a sing-along in the courtyard, and then we demonstrated our robots for the crowd.
Everyone was excited to see this year’s robot, and they were really excited to get a chance to drive the robot. We’re hoping to recruit some new members for next year. In the past few years our club has gained a lot of respect in the school.
After the demo we tried our best in the obstacle course, and danced ferociously to the loud music.
Some of our team is not sporting purple tonight. We’ve got people on the organizing committee, and in the student volunteer crew too!
K-Bots in disguise
If we can handle 19 hours on a bus, 12 hours in the school is no problem at all! We can spread out and move around much easier here.
Throughout the night we played games…
…some of us took a nap…
…and others participated in the annual “Newspaper Fashion Show”. Look at the fantastic transformation from this….

…to this!

Facial hair, glasses, a hat, clothes, cape, shoes and even a staff all made from paper. It was such a fantastic creation that we won first prize in the fashion show. Good job team!
At 5:00AM we had morning yoga to stretch out our sore muscles.
This was followed by breakfast and then the closing ceremonies.
We’re thrilled to announce that over $19000 was raised this year for the Canadian Cancer Society. We are excited to be part of fundraising for such a worthwhile cause. We are also glad that we could introduce the school to our robot and show what Barbra Streisand can do.
K-Botics got recognized in the school Recognition Assembly today! It was fun to get up on stage and share our successes with the school. We are showcased alongside sports teams, the school band, and the student council. It takes a lot of organization to get such a big group of K-Bots to wear their purple shirts today….and to line up in the hallway…
We’ve got some great leaders amongst us!
We showed a video of our robot in action at competition.
After school we set to work on our new pit equipment. Our new battery carrier is going to be spectacular. Tomorrow we’re going to paint it with “Victory Purple”!
As always, our minibot and deployment design group are hard at work. We look forward to seeing their new ideas being built and tested. Until then it is shrouded in secrecy.
Day 27: Exams are done. Classes are back on again, and robotics is happening every evening! Some of our team took a break to focus on exam studying, but we were back in full swing now!
“When you’re here every day, it looks like you are making very little progress, but when you miss a week, you come back and suddenly there’s a robot!” -Nick, grade 9
We painted our bumpers today–the first coat at least. We’ll work away at them over the weekend.
What can we do while waiting for the paint to dry? We taught some of the boys how to play “Stella-Ella-Ola” !
We got presents in the mail today! It’s always a thrill to unpack boxes. Moments later we realized that we had a Josh-In-The-Box !
It’s important to check that we have everything we ordered.
Today’s package contained lots of wire from our new gold level sponsor, electrosonic.
Look at that–the wire is taller than Elizabeth!
What are we going to do with all of that wire? We’re working on building our electrical box.
This is our electrical box from last year (full of wires)…compared with this year’s electrical box (almost empty).
We’re constantly working on ways to stay organized. Multi-tiered storage containers seem to be our solution this year.
As we’re working, we take time to film webinars on various topics. This one is all about using pneumatics.
Once again we’d like to thank our fantastic parents for providing us with delicious lasagna.
Our mentors are working really hard–dedicating lots of time to helping everyone learn. Sometimes though, some of our mentors go a little crazy.
no mentors were actually harmed
We hope that you are having as much fun as we are!
Ever wonder what the inside of a tetrix motor looks like and have been too scared to look inside?
Well ours stopped working…..
So the Tweedles -for testing and prototyping purposes only- attempted to solder the tetrix motor to fix it. Eventually they gave up, and instead….
Opened them up!
While we wait for replacement motors prototyping for our minibot continues.
When asked : “What do we do now?”
We reply:
“We just imagine it working” – Wesley (Grade 10)
Along with our Mini-bot adventures, we welcomed two new members to our team! We are very impressed how they jumped right in helping with bumper planning and filming Webinars.
We introduced the new members to The Rules of K-Botics! Simultaneously we discussed and revised the rules.
What sort of robotics adventures did you have today?
Day 8: What a snowy day! Thanks to all the K-Botics members and mentors who got to school and spent the day working so hard. We’ve got a tower assembly built now.
Because of our short ceilings, we cut the pole to fit in our classroom. We have a longer pole that we can use in the hallway or when we get our warehouse/test area set up.
Our CAD team made great progress on our robot parts while our programming team spent time updating the firmware on the jaguars. We still haven’t seen our test chassis move. Monday will be the big day!
Can you guess what this is???
Prototyping continues on minibot and manipulators for our host bot.
We were pleased to have Richard from Transformix helping out today with wiring for our minibot designs. There’s lots of math involved with figuring out proper circuitry.
We tried hooking up our new circuits, which involved a few soldering lessons. Webinar writing continued throughout the day. Over the next few days we will be loading them on Youtube and creating a webinar section on this site.
What would you like to see in a webinar?
While our footage uploaded we got to see our mentor dissect a rubik’s cube.
this is one way to solve it!
We also used our down time throughout the day to clean up and organize our workspace. Have you noticed how there are often baggies or containers of nuts and bolts (aka metal trail-mix) that get tucked away in cupboards or on shelves?Sorting the “trail-mix” is never a favourite job, but if we all work together it gets done faster. We needed to take stock this weekend so we can order new supplies on Monday.
Today we were thrilled to have lots of parents visit us to see our progress. Robotics is a family affair: feel free to come and visit any time!
We appreciate all the support, and the cookies and muffins that our families deliver to us! There’s a meal sign up sheet by the lab door, we hope that we’ll get some families signing up to provide evening meals when we stay late. Thanks to those who already have signed up!
