Day 33: Bacon, Bumpers and Bridge Balancing

Today we made progress on our robot.  We sawed some parts….some of us tried sawing left handed to keep muscles balanced.  It’s harder than it looks!

sawing

Sawing with her left hand, to keep her muscles balanced

After sawing, the parts had to be filed.  We’re getting very good at filing!  There will be no sharp edges on our robot. filingWe’re making supports for the pneumatic systems and for the battery.  It’s quite a riveting experience.rivetingProgrammers worked hard today getting robots ready for driver tryouts.

thumbs up

thumbs up!

Our 2012 robot now has bumpers fully mounted onto the frame.  We’re glad we made reversible bumpers.  It would take up a lot of space to keep two sets in the pit!

bumpersAt lunch brunch we had pancakes and eggs and BACON!  In total we ate 10 pounds of bacon, and 5 dozen eggs.  Thanks so much to the Tavares family for the feast.

BACON!! To die for!!

Our electrical crew worked hard on various electrical boxes.  The apron of doom was a very good shield–aluminum shavings in the electrical components is never good.

electrical boxJags are now mounted….electrical boxSo are the victors…victorsAnd the wires are all being put in placewiringWe’ve had lots of helpers working on our electrical system. Thanks to Richard from Transformix for lending a hand today.electrical boxWe took a break to de-stress today.  Bubble wrap is a wonderful toy!bubble wrapIn the afternoon we set up the gym for driver/operator/human player tryouts.tryoutsWe practiced throwing long distances.  Some of us scored on the basket–some came close.  Our mentor, James, scored twice!tryoutsThe tryouts consisted of driving an old robot around the gym, through an obstacle course, over the bridge and back, and balancing.  We had a defense robot to deal with too!testAll interested drive team members then took a test to see how well they knew the rules of the game.

Any interested drivers/operators/human players who did not get to try out today can do so tomorrow after 5PM.

Day 19: SNOW DAY!

Day 19: Today was a snow day! Due to the snow, all of today’s exams have been postponed to next Thursday, Feb.2nd. Enjoy the extra studying time! However, it takes much more than snow to keep a K-bot down.friendshipEven though there was snow, many K-bots showed up bright and early. As they say, “The early bird catches the worm.” During exam weeks, room 107 is open starting at 8:30 a.m, so drop by whenever you can!

Throughout the day there have been driver training sessions in the hall outside of room 107. The trainees had to maneuver around pylons that were setup on the track. course

While the robot was having communication issues, we ran through the course instead!  Also, our mechanism for crossing the bridge has been confirmed to function.bridge

But the robot has sustained some damage, as has the bridge!

As usual, the never ending CAD party is still occurring. We have printed out two-dimensional drawings of the robot and the three-dimensional sketch of the robot is nearing completion.

CAD PartyWe love it when people bring us snacks.  Parents sometimes bring us left overs from work.  Today we got some interesting treats from Stacey.snacks

We had many visitors in 107 this evening. We were very glad to have the custodians dropping in for a visit, and a quick eye-glass repair.  We have the best tools around!glassesWe were also very happy to have some friends of friends come to check out what we are doing.

visitorsWe received a call from the Cyberfalcons, team 3710, asking some software questions.  Our lead programming mentor was unavailable, so our student lead took his turn being tech support.

tech support

For dinner, we had a delectable meal of perogies and ham. It is so great how our parents volunteer their time and money to make sure our team gets to eat good food.

dinner

After dinner, some K-bots checked a motor to see if it had any malfunctions.

If you are having any difficulties getting along with each other, remember, “Cooperation rather than competition” – Eric, Grade 9

Tomorrow, we meet from 10-6 and lunch will be served. Get lots of sleep this week, and GOOD LUCK ON THE EXAMS!

Day 18: We Got Our Metal!

Day 18: EXAMS ! YAY!

Today is the first day of exams. If you don’t have an exam, you can just stay home and rest. If you are not a K-Bot, that is.  Exams are just as important as robotics. Some of us study, while the rest us build robots. Some us had exams today, so go cram for it!studying

Some of us worked on the wheels for our robot this year. It is very important to make sure everything works in order to perform well at competitions.

wheels

Some of our metal came in today. It gave Mr.Wood and Mike quite a workout carrying the pieces in….

metal…more than the chin-ups back in 2010 perhaps?

Russell’s dad brought in juice boxes and chips today. It’s nice to take a break between robotics and Exams and have a snack. Thanks!

food time

We then set up driver practices. Many of us tried our hand at driving.  We’re having drive team try outs in February!  Practice is important.

driving

We’re still working on how to tip the ramp.  It’s all coming together quite well.  Get ready to CAD more parts tomorrow, and finish up all part drawings.

wheels done

By the end of the day, our wheels were finished and ready to go.  We look forward to watching these wheels drive around soon.

Tomorrow is another long day!  Room 107 is open from 8:30AM-10:30PM.  Good luck on exams everyone!

Day 14: Prototypes and Discoveries

Day 14: Our morning started off with a fun game of “name the battery”.  We decided on some good ones like “Sparky” and “Tristan”.

naming batteries

We had another birthday to celebrate today!  Our tiara is certainly getting a lot of use.

birthday

We had lots to accomplish today, so we got right to work in small groups.

planning

Our programming team is working on how to work with the camera.

programming

Our bridge was balanced by adding surgical tubing.bridge

We’re now able to test balancing in more realistic conditions.  We started testing some of our sensors on the bridge today.

balancing

We were treated to a delicious lunch…

lunch

….which fueled our afternoon’s prototyping extravaganza.

pneumatics

We learned about how to connect pneumatics, and what pistons might be able to do on our robot.

prototype

We looked at how to control the ball, and came up with a pretty good system.

electrical box

We had a look at last year’s electrical box, and decided how to make changes for this year.test chassisThe test chassis got used again by our programmers to test some code.

scavenging

To help with more prototyping, we had a look through our scrap metal.  Our quest for the keyed shaft was unsuccessful.  “Would the steel shaft sink to the bottom of the pile because it is more dense?” -Mr. Wood

brainstorming

We were able to brainstorm anyway, and the ideas were flowing!

He's using his head!

Today we made some interesting discoveries.

1.  Mike likes apple juice.

2.  Our team is very creative and thoughtful!  Look at the surprise birthday message that was hidden under the sliding blackboard.surprise

3. It is possible to fall asleep on a keyboard.sleeping4.  Tweedles can knit!knitting

5.  Some K-Bots make tea in the normal way….tea

…while others prefer to chew on teabags…

As time goes by, we are progressing with our robot designs, our game strategies, and problem solving.  We’re also learning more about our team mates and our mentors….we’re becoming more tight knit with each day.

We work Monday until 10PM.  Be there!

Day 11: Mecanum Over The Bridge

Day 11:  We worked on many little projects today.  We continued the never-ending-CAD party…

CAD is FUN

…while some of us worked on programming…

programming

….others learned how to knit….(and did a mighty fine job!)

knitting

….while expert knitters worked on our super-top-secret project…

project

We all managed to keep ourselves busy, and have a little fun too!

CADOur new task today was to take the 3D CAD and produce 2D drawings which will be used when we need to manufacture some of our parts.  We ran into a slight big hiccup today when we realized that we’d been using 2012 inventor on our laptop, but we only had 2011 inventor in our computer lab.  The two versions don’t communicate perfectly with each other.  Lessons learned for next year: always use the same version of CAD!

dinner

As always, we had a delicious meal prepared by our parent community–our parents make great food!  THANKS!!

family

We really enjoy when families come and eat with us.  It is nice to get to know each other.  Maybe these two little guys will be on our team in the future.

pasta dinner

We’re in the process of doing pasta-math for our dinner on Friday.  We are cooking dinner for our entire big purple family!  All K-Bots and their families should RSVP online to be included in the count.  Mentors need to RSVP too!!

RSVP please

We also invite parents and families to come and visit us during build season.  We like the moral support, and it’s fun to share our enthusiasm with everyone.visitorsYou never know what you might see when you’re here….sometimes it’s very exciting…like when a robot is tested on the bridge. (For all those wondering, YES, mecanum wheels did work going over the bridge)

bridge

…other times it’s less exciting….

nap

…but no matter what, whenever you visit, you’re bound to see people making friends, and working with each other.  It’s a difficult process to design a robot in 6 weeks.  It becomes much more manageable when we have a strong team to rely on.

hugs

We work tomorrow until 7PM.  Be ready to make a big push to get part drawings done for the drive-train!!

Day 4: Prototype testing and decision making

Work started today at lunch time for some!  Our goal of getting a prototype robot to traverse the barrier had a deadline of 6PM, and we were determined to make that happen.

lunch time

After school, we got some more wood for our field construction team…..

lumber

…we’ve made great headway on backboards and are ready to assemble a barrier and bridge over the next few days.  Our goal is to have essential field pieces built soon so we can begin to test robot designs on them.field

Measure twice and cut once!  We’ve been doing a pretty careful job so far.

cad

Our CAD enthusiasts have completed the CAD of the field today!  We’re going to have so many more CAD jobs in the next week.  We will be preparing technical drawings of our final robot design and parts for fabrication.

test chassis

After a few hours of work this afternoon our simple chassis was driving.  Testing a chassis alone was not enough though.  We were curious about weight distribution and how tippy our robot might be.  test chassisWe decided to suspend a weight from a meter above our robot to mimic anything we might build up there, and then give it a try.  We installed plywood chain guards to keep us all safe.

“We’re prototyping, and it’s a bit sketchy as usual” -Raymond, grade 11

demolished

After ramming our test robot into a few barriers to test how it tipped, it was looking a little worse for wear.

“The past 20 minutes completely trump all of my experiences in grade 7 and 8.” -Olivia, grade 8.a real thinker

Back to the drawing board we go….

drawing board

By the end of our meeting today we have made progress in deciding the key configuration of our robot.  Now begins the fun of designing the details.  You never know where ideas come from.  We prototype and experiment with some interesting and unconventional materials.

ideas

We had the first meeting of the Chairman’s video team.  We’re starting earlier this year to make sure that we get the footage that we need without a feeling of panic!

video meeting

We have started several top secret knitting projects this build season.  They include a lot of creative design, and incorporating technology in unconventional ways.

knittingSome of us spent a great deal of time doing calculations, doing research and gathering our materials.

ball winder

"Didn't we design a better way to do this last year?"

We taught a few new members how to knit today.  When they were upset about making mistakes Paige had some good advice.  We think it applies to building robots too!

“You learn more sometimes from failing, than you do from doing things right” -Paige, grade 10

Every day we work hard to balance homework and robotics.  Sometimes that is best done alone…

homework

…other times we gather to have group physics parties!

Tomorrow we meet from 2:45-10PM.  Dinner is provided.  See everyone there!

Super Top Secret Design Challenge

Our meeting this week was busy and productive.  We debriefed about our bottle drive experience, and plan to hold another one that is bigger and better in the spring–so parents….please save your empties for us!

Look who showed up today!  Remi….who is modelling our “Apron of Doom”–if you do not clean up, you must wear it! (here are some classic apron pictures)  Remi is working on putting together an order of hoodies.  Think about whether you are interested in purchasing a team hoodie this year.  Prices and designs will be coming your way soon!

remiWe discussed the plans for the FIRST LEGO league tournament, and Jr. FIRST LEGO League Expo that we’re hosting on December 3rd.  We look forward to lots of our K-Bots volunteering to help out with set up on December 2nd in the evening, and with the running of the event on December 3rd.  We’ll be hard at work by 8 until probably 5 or 6.  There’s lots of volunteer hours available!  There are many jobs for students to do, from helping with registration, being good tour guides of our school for all of the visiting teams, cooking a delicious pasta lunch for our judges, and even taking a turn being the blue bear to help lead cheering!  For more information please contact Christine.

CADOur group split up for rotations of CAD tutorial work–some of us are getting really good at the practical applications of CAD.

CAD superstar

Others are getting really good at the impractical applications of CAD.  Meet Geoffrey the dragon!  GeoffreyWe held a brainstorming rotation for Chairman’s report ideas, and activities we should engage in over the year to help our community and build up our team.  We also walked everyone through the STIMS registration and online consent forms for FIRST.  Students and parents both must complete the process for the permission forms to be complete.brainstorming

Our beta testers were busy getting Barbra Streisand (Kasey III) up and running, as an important beta-testing deadline is coming up next week.

betatestingThe remaining station was a super top secret design challenge. Groups had 30 minutes and a variety of materials (wheels, newspaper, straws, plastecine, skewers, cardboard, wood, screws, saws, measuring devices, and lots of tape) to construct a vehicle that was powered by a balloon that could travel the farthest down the school hallway.

During the 30 minutes, each group needed to plan, prototype, construct, test and modify their design, as well as demonstrate good communication and teamwork skills.

discussing building

Since each group worked in isolation, the vehicles produced were unique.  Some had wheels, some didn’t.  Some used an inflated balloon, others used it as a slingshot.

balloon on steroids

that balloon's on steroids!

slingshot

If the car breaks, and part of the car goes the farthest, it still counts....right?

the real car is Sam

The real car is Sam....the balloon is just the distraction!

no wheels

look mom--no wheels!

We all learned a lot during this challenge.  It’s important to use time wisely–to allow time for testing and modifications–to plan before building–and to bring spare parts to the competition.  We had lots of fun, even if the vehicles did not travel too far down the hallway!  This might be a challenge we’ll revisit in the future.

durable?

we'll work on durability of designs...

Getting Organized

Have you ever wondered what it looks like when a 10 square foot pit area expands to fill an entire computer lab?  We witnessed it today as we unpacked and repacked all of our tools and supplies.

packing

The pit is all clean now though!clean

We’re getting better at packing everything so it is easy to find.  We use plastic baggies to keep everything together.

organizing

Organized to our high standards!

Our Chairman’s team escaped from the chaos of tool organization and the sounds of drills and vacuums to practise their presentation in the hallway.  It was great to have Petey come visit and provide his advice.

practice

Out the back door of the lab we have an area that is tall enough to house a minibot pole.  We all gathered to see if our improvements have reduced the time it takes for the minibot to get all the way to the top.minibot

We’re still working hard to perfect the minibot.  A good minibot is a definite game changer!minibot

We look forward to watching the webcast of the Waterloo Regional competition tomorrow and Saturday.  How fast will their minibots go?

Warehouse Day 3

Day 44:  Some of us started our day rested, with lots of energy and enthusiasm while others of us started continued our day with caffeine, yawns, and all the giddiness that comes with very little sleep.

timmies

Connections were soldered, resoldered, and resoldered again, and will be connected once the parts arrive Tuesday at 5PM.

We hope that everyone gets a good night sleep tonight.  Save up your energy for the stress fun that is bag and tag day!  We’re working from 4PM until midnight at the Transformix warehouse.  This will be the last time to see/touch the robot until New York!

Warehouse Day Two

Day 43: We spent the day at the Transformix Engineering warehouse with team 3710, the Cyberfalcons, our rookie friends.  It was great to have the chance to try our robot out on the field with another robot.  We practiced some strategy for offense and defense, and practiced scoring lots of tubes.  It was nice to have some of our purple family visiting on reading week.  Mary, our driver from 2009 came to see how our current drive team is doing.

mary

After lots of practice, our driver gets really really sleepy!  He claims to just be “resting his eyes”…what do you think?

driver practice

We are so glad that we can put cardboard Mike away!  We now have our mentor Mike back with us.  We missed him lots!  Thanks for bringing back lots of energy Mikey!!!

mikey

Mike was not the only one with energy!  We’ve got lots of little friends who are very energetic!

fun with innertubes

Look at this!  It’s an energetic Tweedle-Falcon playing defense against our robot.  He’s doing a really good job too.

duncan the falcon

It’s nice to be working alongside another FRC team in these last few days.  We enjoy visiting with them, and sharing ideas.  They are great scrimmage partners, and they have also figured out how to keep Tetrix motors from burning out.  Here’s a picture, shared with permission of the Cyberfalcons.

tetrix solutionWe’re trying to repair our broken motors so we can test our minibot designs.

Our programmers were hard at work.  We’re getting a little frustrated with some issues with our jaguars.

“We’ve got toucans and jaguars working together….It’s like we’re the United Nations of the animal kingdom” -Duncan (Queen’s mentor)

programming is fun

We were extremely thankful for our marvelous dinner…not only did we have drinks, salad and muffins….

dinner time…we also had a barbeque!  We had no idea what was in store for us until we opened the door and saw a remarkable sight.  There were two BBQs set up, and also a kitchen stove (converted to run on propane).  Many thanks to the Calligaris family for the feast!

BBQ

yes, there is an oven!

Richard from Transformix came to visit us to see what we’re up to.  He’s impressed with how much work we’ve done so far.

Richard

We’ve been getting ready for family day.  It’s nice to have so many family members hanging out at the warehouse with us, helping us with our day-to-day work.  We appreciate the support and smiles from everyone who stops by to visit.
