Super Top Secret Design Challenge

Our meeting this week was busy and productive.  We debriefed about our bottle drive experience, and plan to hold another one that is bigger and better in the spring–so parents….please save your empties for us!

Look who showed up today!  Remi….who is modelling our “Apron of Doom”–if you do not clean up, you must wear it! (here are some classic apron pictures)  Remi is working on putting together an order of hoodies.  Think about whether you are interested in purchasing a team hoodie this year.  Prices and designs will be coming your way soon!

remiWe discussed the plans for the FIRST LEGO league tournament, and Jr. FIRST LEGO League Expo that we’re hosting on December 3rd.  We look forward to lots of our K-Bots volunteering to help out with set up on December 2nd in the evening, and with the running of the event on December 3rd.  We’ll be hard at work by 8 until probably 5 or 6.  There’s lots of volunteer hours available!  There are many jobs for students to do, from helping with registration, being good tour guides of our school for all of the visiting teams, cooking a delicious pasta lunch for our judges, and even taking a turn being the blue bear to help lead cheering!  For more information please contact Christine.

CADOur group split up for rotations of CAD tutorial work–some of us are getting really good at the practical applications of CAD.

CAD superstar

Others are getting really good at the impractical applications of CAD.  Meet Geoffrey the dragon!  GeoffreyWe held a brainstorming rotation for Chairman’s report ideas, and activities we should engage in over the year to help our community and build up our team.  We also walked everyone through the STIMS registration and online consent forms for FIRST.  Students and parents both must complete the process for the permission forms to be complete.brainstorming

Our beta testers were busy getting Barbra Streisand (Kasey III) up and running, as an important beta-testing deadline is coming up next week.

betatestingThe remaining station was a super top secret design challenge. Groups had 30 minutes and a variety of materials (wheels, newspaper, straws, plastecine, skewers, cardboard, wood, screws, saws, measuring devices, and lots of tape) to construct a vehicle that was powered by a balloon that could travel the farthest down the school hallway.

During the 30 minutes, each group needed to plan, prototype, construct, test and modify their design, as well as demonstrate good communication and teamwork skills.

discussing building

Since each group worked in isolation, the vehicles produced were unique.  Some had wheels, some didn’t.  Some used an inflated balloon, others used it as a slingshot.

balloon on steroids

that balloon's on steroids!

slingshot

If the car breaks, and part of the car goes the farthest, it still counts....right?

the real car is Sam

The real car is Sam....the balloon is just the distraction!

no wheels

look mom--no wheels!

We all learned a lot during this challenge.  It’s important to use time wisely–to allow time for testing and modifications–to plan before building–and to bring spare parts to the competition.  We had lots of fun, even if the vehicles did not travel too far down the hallway!  This might be a challenge we’ll revisit in the future.

durable?

we'll work on durability of designs...

Training Week 4

This week we got together with the Cyberfalcons, team 3710, and learned new skills with them. It was wonderful to have their programming mentor lead a workshop for lots of our K-Bots.

The other half of the group went through a set of stations to learn and work together. We learned all about chain–how to cut it and how to identify and use the master link.

20111024-092731.jpg

We looked at an old drive train, and found the spots where fingers could get caught.
20111024-092748.jpgAt another station we worked on our team building and communication. We all stood on a blanket and folded it as much as possible while still standing on it!

20111024-092648.jpgWe used this time together to practice our communication skills also. We want to get everyone comfortable talking about our team and FIRST in general.

We had a positive group discussion about our sponsorship and marketing. We’re redoing our sponsorship package to show to potential sponsors.
20111024-092739.jpgWe started with some hands on skills in wiring. We cut wires, stripped wires and learned how to solder.
20111024-092743.jpgGeorge, a new K-Bot this year, thought that soldering was the best thing that he’d learned this season.
20111024-092753.jpgAfter the rotations were done, we started looking at CAD. We’ve got a tutorial for everyone to work through–it’s on the robotics drive at school–email your files to Kevin when you are done!
20111024-092758.jpgOur game analysis session focused on Breakaway, the FRC game from 2010. it was great to hear what the new members thought of the game and what strategies they came up with.

There are so many great and useful skills that we’re learning each time we meet. Thanks to the student and mentors who have been taking leadership roles. We’re building up a great skills base for the future.

20111024-092803.jpg

Some of us are still working on learning some skills.

Training week 3

We split our group up this week to learn lots of new skills. Part of our group teamed up with team 3710 to work on programming.

20111014-093505.jpg
It is fun to get working together with the Cyberfalcons this early in the season! Next week we’ve invited them to join us at K-Botics headquarters.

Our beta testing has begun now! We’re excited to be doing software and hardware beta testing again this year. It will be fun to see how the Kinect will be involved in this year’s challenge.

The other part of our group split up and learned about the electrical components on a robot, next week we’re looking forward to preparing wires and putting together some circuits.

20111014-093549.jpg

We continued to work on our game analysis, this time on a VEX game–this made it a challenge for all experienced FIRST participants. We’re getting good at processing new challenges–we’ll be all set for kick-off.

20111014-094927.jpg
Another group looked at different robots and mechanisms that have appeared in the past. We looked for common features and noticed how many different ways people approached similar tasks. We’re hoping to get one of our old drive trains working so we can start working on our driving skills next!

20111014-093645.jpg
Our team building activity was to play pictionary and charades using a lot of vocabulary from robotics. We found out that some of us are good at drawing and others struggle sometimes when they can’t use their words. We’re working on developing good communication, and strong friendships so we can work together positively through out the season.

At the end of the workshops some of us got our hands on some CAD software and learned how to model 3D objects.

20111014-093912.jpg

We were also glad to welcome some visiting family members! We love to show off our team and our robot.

20111014-094058.jpgWe welcome everyone to come and visit us at K-Botics headquarters on Thursdays after school!

Mark your calendars and save your empties for our bottle drive on November 1st!

Pre-Season Training

We gathered to learn about safety. Together we brainstormed a very impressive list of safety rules and showed all of our new members where our safety glasses are and where the First Aid kit is. We are planning to run a First Aid course for interested team members and mentors before build season. Stay tuned for more information.

Because we have so many members this season, we split up into groups and rotated through several stations. Over the course of our meeting we all learned about how to charge all types of batteries safely. Everyone was introduced to MEL (our Mobile.Electronic.Loader) that we constructed last year to house and charge batteries.

20111010-081923.jpg
We all got to meet Barbra Streisand (a.k.a. Kasey III) the robot we built for Logomotion.

20111010-081956.jpg
We learned about different parts of robots, from wheels to the drive train, the control system, pneumatics, solenoids, etc. At first glance for new members the robot looks like a very complicated piece of equipment. Next year though, after going through a build season, all of our new members will be much more comfortable with all of these parts! After some instruction on proper drill usage, we had a chance to drill holes in metal and in wood.

20111010-082049.jpg
This skill is very important when we need to cheesehole our robot! Our last stations were teamwork and team building activities. From untangling a human knot to playing various get-to-know-you games we learned a little bit more about each other, and had a lot of laughs together.

20111010-082116.jpg

Thanks to all of the workshop organizers and leaders! We look forward to learning more together next week.

Happy 2809 day!

20111010-082320.jpg
It’s September 28th….or 28/09! We love any excuse for a celebration. Our team gathered at lunch today for some celebratory banana cake!

Welcome New K-Bots

We were excited to welcome 40 new and returning K-Bots to our big purple family. Our more experienced members had a great workshop to get people mixing and mingling and to introduce FIRST and our team.new members

After name games we split up into groups to practice our teamwork skills and our design creativity.  We tried to build the tallest newspaper tower!newspaper tower
Each group had a different approach to teamwork and to the design process.  Everyone had a chance to share their ideas and contribute to building some pretty fantastic creations.

teamworkHere are the results:  Group 1 had a really tall tower!  They took advantage of having several really tall people in their group who could put the top pieces on.

Group 1

Group 1

Group 2:  This tower was the only one that could fit an entire person inside it.  This group had lots of fun while building, and seemed to focus on triangles!

group 2

Group 2

Group 3: This tower was starting off well with a sturdy base as a foundation, but after a few attempts it ended up toppling over.  This group was very spirited, and had fun throughout the entire building process.

Group 3

Group 3

People might wonder what building newspaper towers has to do with building a robot.  Although groups were tasked with building a tower, the real goal of the activity is to build a team!

snacksWe had delicious snacks (Thanks Megan!)

demoThen our robots were on display in the hallway and everyone got a chance to drive and operate Kasey I and Kasey III.

We’re keen to see everyone back again next Thursday when we start our pre-season training.  Bring your friends!

Congratulations to 2809 WAFFLES

Some of our K-Bots are part of another robotics team, and they’ve worked hard since May to prepare for tournaments this winter.  This past weekend some of our K-Bots and members of the big purple family (aka mentors and families) made the trip to St. Catharine’s to cheer on the team 2809 WAFFLES as they competed in the VEX robotics competition.

We are so proud of their hard work, good sportsmanship, spirit, and great robot performance.  The WAFFLES played hard, and made it to the semi final rounds.  They impressed everyone with their knowledge and skill, and came home with the Judge’s Award!

mentors are getting silly...again!

Good job everyone!  We look forward to seeing you all next week–there’s lots to do to prepare for New York!

Dragons, Oh My!

Only a few days after build season, we’re hard at work again! Today, some K-bots got together at a top-secret location to work on our challenge that we are putting together for a practice Lego Robotics Competition. We’ll be helping one of our local elementary schools host the practice competition this Thursday.

Dragon for our Medieval Theme

We have been having lots of fun designing a challenge that is medieval themed!

Duct Tape Solves everything!

After some design changes to make sure that our challenges will fit into our space constraints (our challenge boards have to fit into the back of a parent volunteer’s car!), we were eager to start building! As always, we discovered that duct tape can solve almost anything!

Marbl;es for the challenge

Some of us have been working very hard over the last few days to find some materials that we can use to make our challenge more interesting- we’ve been sorting through not only our tool boxes but also our old toys!

Textured Surface for the challenge

We are including lots of different elements in our challenge… we might be including anything from textured surfaces…

Black Tape for Line Following

To black tape for line following…

Yarn for challenge!

And, of course, we knitters can use yarn for almost anything!

But we can’t tell you exactly what the challenge is yet, because some of our younger LEGO Robotics friends might be reading our blog, and it’s a surprise!

We’re so excited to see what the elementary school students come up with at the on Thursday! It will be fun to see how the different teams come up with different ways to complete our challenges.  We hope to inspire many teams to learn more LEGO robotics skills, and to form FLL teams for the upcoming year.

Stealth and Secrecy, Necessities for a Robotnapping

Day 43 1/2: THIS is what they were up to…..NOW we know their plan.

robotnapping

They were planning a robotnapping adventure!

Where were they going?  To the car!

robotnapping

With the robot loaded into the car….and supplies snuck out of the school…..they headed to W.A.F.F.L.E.S. HQ.  Luckily there was snow falling to cover their tracks!

sneaking into school

Once set up….the robotnapping fun began!

robotnapping

Before long, our entire purple family came to rescue the robot….

12:00AM We divided up our team: minibots in the dining room, soldering in the kitchen, donuts on the counter, robot in the living room, and a big purple family on the couches, floor, and all available chairs.  Before long, wires and tubing were being cut.  Vacuums were on, and aluminum and lexan shavings were quickly disappearing.  Our robot was going on a diet…trying to lose 2 pounds in one night. We’re also trying to make it more organized and pretty looking.  Our special circuit boards are making it look beautiful!skype to BC

We had a great skype conversation with a former mentor for our team who’s out in BC.  Everyone wants to come to an all night robot party!

1:00AM We took a family day photo before some of our more tired members needed to go home to rest.

purple family2:03AM Some of us are resorting to 30 second naps to re-energize!  We’re wondering how many of us will be feeling enthusiastic at 10AM….

30 second napOverheard through the wee hours of the morning…. (note: there are many references to WIRE strippers….just to clarify)

2:20AM “I’m concerned that you’re taking all the wires off of the robot!  You’ll have to put them back on again!” -K-Botics Parent

“What did I go over here to find?”  -Tim, Grade 11

“I think we need pull-ups” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor)

“How can I get a time zone” -Duncan (Queen’s Mentor)

“The wires are getting neater, I like this!” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor)

“I feel like I’m a crimping machine!” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor)

working hard2:35AM “But what about the strippers…I only care about the strippers” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor)

“Duncan you really want to do your Masters at Queen’s” -Christine (Mentor) you see…we’re trying to get all of our mentors to stay in town for as long as possible.

“You just want the good strippers” -Goran (Purple family member)

“Is the bus going to be noisy?” -Ann (Parent mentor)

2:45AM “I’m borrowing this….to punch something” -Brennan (Grade 10) “No!  If you do, I’ll punch you!” -Elizabeth (Grade 11)

3:00AM We’ve officially been “Rick Rolled” Now you have been too!  Apparently we’re not working hard enough.

“Careful guys my alarm’s going to go off in six hours!” -Duncan (Queen’s Mentor)

3:15AM  “Is dust heavy?  Why are you vacuuming the robot?” -Ann (Parent mentor half asleep on the couch)

4:00AM “I have the strippers” -Tim (Grade 11)

“What’s a male and what’s a female?  I can’t tell the difference” -Elizabeth (Grade 11)

“I need an exposed male and a sheltered female” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor) “there’s a world shortage of exposed males” -Duncan (Queen’s Mentor)

“Petey and I have good sized muscles, but mine are covert” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor)

5:00AM “I’ve definitely heard this song before.” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor) “It’s a 40 song playlist, that’s not a good sign” -Tim (Grade 11)

“Are we eating pizza for breakfast?” -Kaley (Grade 9)

“It’s 5 hours until Transformix, that’s like a full night’s sleep” -Duncan (Queen’s Mentor)

“Do I smell burnt pizza?” -Rachel (Mentor) “No that’s just burnt oven” -Goran (Purple Family member)

pizza!

5:30AM “I’m not that tired, I just can’t think” -Tim (Grade 11)

“I feel like I’m jet-lagged!” -Justin (Queen’s Mentor)

5:40AM “It’s not today until I say it’s today!” -Mike (Queen’s Mentor)

6:30AM we realized that it is getting light outside

7:00AM we’re cleaning up and getting ready to have a nap before going back to work!

clean up time!We hope you have had as enjoyable and productive a night as we have.

It’s officially bag and tag tomorrow!

We’re Getting Silly

Day 18:  Work started bright and early today.  Some of our Queen’s University mentors were working at the McLaughlin Hall Machine Shop cutting parts for our chassis.

Since it is exams this week there are no scheduled classes.  Our workshop is open all day for people to come in and work on our robot.  We started off the morning sewing bumper fabric.  By the end of the day about 8 of our members had learned to use these sewing machines!  Talk about team work.

sewing

Later in the day, we worked on riveting together a metal box that we made.

riveting

We’re consulting our CAD drawings and measuring carefully to mark where holes should be drilled.

measuring carefully

Sticking with tradition, we’re cheese holing our work with bear paws.  This is one way to show our KCVI spirit!  (our mascot is the blue bear)

cheese hole

We are getting good at using the shear to cut our pieces.  All it takes is precision to line up the blade carefully, and then some good sized muscles to cut the material.

shear

Work continues on our minibot design.  We’re intrigued by video we’ve seen of other minibots climbing up towers.  We’re still waiting on either new Tetrix motors, or an easy way to fix them.

minibot

sorting through minibot parts

By late afternoon we had started filming interviews again for the Chairman’s video that we’re making.  We were thrilled to have Mr. Labrie, our superintendent, visit us again.  He spoke very highly of our program, and the impact that we’re having in the school, community, and the entire school board.  He looks forward to visiting again in the next 26 days to see our robot take shape.

interview

As time goes by, we start to get a bit silly.  Maybe it’s exams.  Maybe it’s that we’re half way through week 3 of build.  Maybe it’s that we’re spending almost all of our waking hours together.  Who knows the reason, but mentors seem to be a little bit unpredictable these days.

tweedles

The Tweedles are working well together as usual

It's not JNo's fault

For once Mike isn't blaming everything on JNo!

deburring giggles

Things like de-burring make us really happy!

After working hard for the whole day, we enjoyed a dinner together as a team.  Many thanks go out to all of the K-Botics parents who have signed up to provide dinner during our late days in build season.  We appreciate having a time to sit down together as a team and eat something healthier than donuts and pizza!

team dinner

Thanks to our K-Botics Parents for the great dinner!

It gives us energy to work late into the night and build not only fantastic robots, but friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
