Day 19: SNOW DAY!

Day 19: Today was a snow day! Due to the snow, all of today’s exams have been postponed to next Thursday, Feb.2nd. Enjoy the extra studying time! However, it takes much more than snow to keep a K-bot down.friendshipEven though there was snow, many K-bots showed up bright and early. As they say, “The early bird catches the worm.” During exam weeks, room 107 is open starting at 8:30 a.m, so drop by whenever you can!

Throughout the day there have been driver training sessions in the hall outside of room 107. The trainees had to maneuver around pylons that were setup on the track. course

While the robot was having communication issues, we ran through the course instead!  Also, our mechanism for crossing the bridge has been confirmed to function.bridge

But the robot has sustained some damage, as has the bridge!

Much progress had been made in knitting today as well. While some of us are knitting …

so neat!

And others are winding the wool into more manageable balls….winder…with greater or lesser success…winderThe wool will be used for team hats and for Kare-bots

As usual, the never ending CAD party is still occurring. We have printed out two-dimensional drawings of the robot and the three-dimensional sketch of the robot is nearing completion.

CAD PartyWe love it when people bring us snacks.  Parents sometimes bring us left overs from work.  Today we got some interesting treats from Stacey.snacks

We had many visitors in 107 this evening. We were very glad to have the custodians dropping in for a visit, and a quick eye-glass repair.  We have the best tools around!glassesWe were also very happy to have some friends of friends come to check out what we are doing.

visitorsWe received a call from the Cyberfalcons, team 3710, asking some software questions.  Our lead programming mentor was unavailable, so our student lead took his turn being tech support.

tech support

For dinner, we had a delectable meal of perogies and ham. It is so great how our parents volunteer their time and money to make sure our team gets to eat good food.

dinner

After dinner, some K-bots checked a motor to see if it had any malfunctions.

Tomorrow, we meet from 10-6 and lunch will be served. Get lots of sleep this week, and GOOD LUCK ON THE EXAMS!

Day 12: Adventures at the Grocery Store

Day 12:  We got right to work today on a variety of tasks. programmerWe’re getting a second driver station up and running so we can have drive practice before we hold tryouts later in the season.  driver training

Meanwhile….on the other side of the room…a rather creative brainstorming process led to the inevitable conclusion that we needed to use “the force” to keep our robot together!

the force

"lets hold our robot together using the force!"

We started to do some very premature pre-season scouting of the teams that will be at GTR East and Waterloo.  We need our new team mates to start connecting team numbers to names and their histories.

scouts

CAD work was continued.  We’re working on getting drawings done for our drive train.

CAD

We need to be careful with dimensioning and other specifications.  There’s lots to learn!

Part of our team embarked on a great expedition today to the grocery store.  Tomorrow we’re hosting our Parent Appreciation Pasta dinner, and we estimate 100 people will be there!  There’s lots to do to get ready for such a large event.  We made a menu plan and a grocery list.  We researched quantities online for feeding so many people.

“5 lbs of ground beef….that’s like a baby cow!” -Sam, grade 10

We researched coupons and estimated how much dinner would cost.  We then took a field trip through a blizzard to the grocery store.  We got strange looks buying SO much food!

groceries

For future reference: we bought 5lbs of ground beef, 7 onions, 16 900g bags of pasta, 8L of tomato sauce, 6 cans of tomatoes, garlic, 12 peppers, 12 heads of lettuce, 4 heads of romaine, 4 cucumbers, 2 bags of spinach, 5 bottles of salad dressing, 6 carrots, green onions, 5 loaves of French bread, 5 cake mixes, cooking oil, 2 dozen eggs, 2 pounds of butter, 2kg of icing sugar…and all that cost around $140.  food

We’ll start to cook right after school tomorrow!

In knitting news….we’ve got a new expert!  Kare-bots are being knit EVERYWHERE!!!

knitting

our other knitting project is ongoing, and ever growing larger.  It will be exciting to see it completed!

We’re having lots of fun with each other while we’re working hard on designing our robot.  We are celebrating the small moments, like finding a heart candy with FIRST on it….

We work until 10 tomorrow.  Our Pasta dinner starts at 6:30, but families are welcome to arrive early or stay late to see our progress.

Thank You KLETON Manufacturing

We got a fantastic gift today from our newest sponsor KLETON Manufacturing Inc.  It’s a rolling cabinet with drawers for tools, and a great work surface.

presents

Assembly was a fun challenge.  We’re good at reading the instructions first!

reading instructions

It is a perfect fit with our pit layout.  It’s nice to have drawers that lock now, and we’ll be much more organized that we were before.

perfect fit

Thanks again KLETON Manufacturing!

In other news…M.E.L.’s fully loaded now!  Batteries are charging, spools of wire are installed, and she’s pretty mobile now that the handle and wheels are installed.

…slowly but surely we’re getting all of the tasks done in preparation for our departure on Tuesday evening.

Working Hard

scouting

Our scouting of the Newton Division has begun!  We’re making tabs for our binder dividers and realizing that there are a LOT of teams.

paint

Our battery station has had another fresh coat of paint, and it’s looking really good.

minibot

We’ve been testing a new minibot deployment system, and it seems to be working much better.

GTR Day 2 2011

It was an early start this morning! We learned a few things during breakfast….It’s possible to feed 46 people bagels in half an hour as long as you have many many bagels, many many toasters and a lot of cooperation. We only blew one fuse in the process!

breakfast

all of us are feeling a bit blurry before 7AM

We got to the Hershey Center early enough to get our favourite seats in the stands. Our scouts are keen to see all of the action, so reserving the prime seats is a priority!

morning

Between matches, we were able to show our spirit by cheering and dancing and being generally excited about the competition. It’s lots of fun to watch your robot do AMAZING things! Other robots are doing some pretty amazing things too. The competition is pretty challenging.

excited

Here we are attempting to score an ubertube in autonomous mode. We got pretty good at it over the course of the day! Some of the other teams can reliably score not only one, but TWO ubertubes! It’s fantastic to see.

ubertubesBetween matches, our robot gets worked on by our expert pit crew. It’s pretty crowded and busy in there. Judges and safety officials, robots, mentors, students, families and friends are all milling about, looking around, repairing robots, changing batteries, lining up for matches, strategizing with alliances etc. The pit is a fun place to visit, specially when the robot is working well.

repairsThis morning our Chairman’s team did a great job with their presentation. They explained to judges all about what we do that makes our team special, how we work to get others interested in science and technology, and how our team is building a strong foundation for the future.

tailgateOur excellent lunch plan was a success today. Thanks to Gord for organizing the sandwich run! We had a tailgate party in the parking lot.

award
Our matches went really well today. We won 5 and lost 3, some were really close games! We have two more games tomorrow in the morning before alliance selection begins. At the end of the first day we’re happily sitting in 8th place, and we’re excited to announce that we won the Innovation in Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation.award winners

After dinner our scouts gathered with the Cyberfalcons to discuss our top 24 list for alliance selection, and the minibot team got to work on more modifications to the deployment system. We’re looking forward to seeing it work tomorrow morning.

GTR Practice Day 2011

It was a cold and slushy drive for our team this morning. Many thanks to everyone for waking up early to ensure we got into the pits on time and set up quickly.

setting up

As the day went on more and more carpools arrived…and our scouting team mobilized to chat with all of the other teams about their robots. Pit scouting is very important. We can get a close up look at the robots and interact with the teams. There are teams from far and wide that have come to compete. We’ve noticed a Mexican team near by that has been chanting and singing all day!

scoutsOur robot was one of the earliest on the field. We passed inspection quickly, and have been fine tuning programming for autonomous mode and attaching our new minibot deployment system.

robotWe vastly improved our lunch time routine. This year we offered three restaurant choices, and got cash in advance, then brought a marker to label everyone’s sandwich/burger order with their name so we could distribute them with minimal chaos.cyberfalcons

It is fun to be neighbors with our rookie friends both in the pits and in the stands. We can share our tools and pool our resources for scouting.

pitThe afternoon proved interesting: we improved our minibot deployment once again.  We dealt with some pneumatic leaks, and we had plenty of knitting lessons in the stands!

family dinnerOur big purple family had dinner together at Swiss Chalet tonight.  We’ve never had a reservation for 48 before!  It was lots of fun–we celebrated RJ’s birthday with a song and a sundae complete with candle.

happy birthdayPits open tomorrow at 8AM.  Stay tuned to the webcast to see us in action!

Five Days Until GTR

We got here this morning and turned on the webcast of the Waterloo Regional.  It was our soundtrack for the day.

experiment

Our day started out with an interesting experiment.  We found out what is inside a tape measure.  We also found out that they are very hard to put together once they come apart.

lights

We kept working on our mission to lighten the lights.  We’re making good progress.  We want to be looking flashy at GTR.

minibot

Our dedicated minibot team was working on making more last minute revisions.  Top secret deployment prototypes are being refined as well.happy birthday

We had a break part way through the afternoon to eat cake and celebrate Brennan’s birthday.  Happy 16th Brennan!

chairmans preparationsWe made good use of the printer, laminator and paper cutter today!  Precision work and attention to detail are key when preparing visuals for our Chairman’s presentation.

webcast

We took breaks from our designing to watch the semis and finals in Waterloo.  With so many scoring records broken today it is hard not to watch!

Full of Last Minute Work

Today was a really exciting  day full of productivity.  The meeting began with a mass collection of all our wonderful crew.  We found out information about our upcoming trip to Toronto including our carpool arrangements and all of the rules.  We also ate some candy given to us from “Under Control” team 1156 from Brazil.  It was delicious!

candy

We continued to work on the minibot deployment feverishly.

Our Chairman’s presenters organized themselves and continued practicing their presentation for GTR, top secret of course!  Our video is posted here.  Our scouting/strategy crew took a look at game video from past regional competitions to look for new strategies to try.

scoutingWe got really wacky and broke out the suspenders. They look really awesome!

suspendersIt was learned today that WD 40 is fantastic at removing logo goo. New logo’s  were also printed and cut to fit the armour.  We’re not going to stick them on until we’re sure that the armour is in its final configuration.  It all depends on the minibot deployment!

logosOur colourful lights that have many uses, are now much lighter. They were cheeseholed, and some mechanisms were replaced with lighter alternatives.lightsAnd of course the back of our room is still a mess, we really should stop looking at it and clean it up.

mess

Maybe tomorrow will be the day!

We’re Back!

We’re back after March Break!  We had cake today and celebrated our success at the New York City Regional competition.

hardware

We’ve unpacked some things, including our recently acquired hardware, and our brand new K-Botics flag.

new flag

We’re working on refining our minibot deployment system and making our minibot go faster.

measuring

We’re preparing for the Greater Toronto Regional competition.  Our scouting binder is now prepped and ready to go!

scouting binder

We’re still trying to get our awesome lights back on the robot.  It’s all a question of weight.  lights

K-Botics is meeting daily this week until 5PM to prepare for GTR.

New York City Regional Day 2

We got there early this morning, and had time to take a group photo while we were waiting for the pits/stands to open.  This is one of our “crazy” shots.crazy shot

After getting our seats in the stands we had the opportunity to meet Woodie Flowers!  He chatted with us about our robot, and we got to sign his shirt and take pictures with him.

Woodie Flowers

here we are with Woodie

Our robot had some technical difficulties early on.  A radio problem? A transformer that stopped working?  Whatever it was we were kind of stuck.  No spare parts available!  We’ve asked around and may have come up with a solution.  When we’re going, we can score an entire logo in under a minute!  We somehow ended up motionless by the end of the matches though.  It certainly is a challenge to get all the pieces working at the same time.

in the pit

This is the view of our pit.  Between matches the robot is here getting worked on.  Batteries get charged and problems get solved.  Judges have been coming around today to ask lots of questions.  It’s been a busy place!

captain canada

Back in the stands our spirited team was led by Captain Canada today!  Captain Canada made a friend from the English team.  Between matches we have dance breaks!  We’re one of the few teams that is dancing a lot–we’re teaching our dance moves to others near us in the stands.

dancing lessons

When games are being played all the dancing stops, and the serious work of scouting begins.  We fill out a page about each robot’s performance during each match.

watching

It takes a lot of attention to fill out all of the sheets!  It takes a lot of focus to watch one robot during the entire game, specially when some of the games are really exciting.

scouting

Our Game results from the first day of competition do not reflect the moments of brilliance our robot had when it was active on the field.  We played 6 matches, won 2, lost 3, and tied 1.  The scores seem to be heavily influenced by penalty points.

We are very excited to have won an award today!  We were awarded the Engineering Excellence Award sponsored by Delphi which “Celebrates an elegant and advantageous machine feature”.  The judges particularly liked our claw and electrical boxes.  We think this is pretty awesome– It was great to get down on the field and go through the high five line-up.  We hope to do that again soon.

10:45PM

We had dinner and then our scouting meeting. We’ve made our list of top 24 teams that we’d want to work with in the final alliances.  Some of the decisions were tough–do we choose offense bots or defense bots, traction or turning ability, claws or elevators…the choices are endless!  We use a projector to show our database to everyone.  We also look up photos of robots to help jog memories.

scouting

Our pit crew and drive team met over dinner to discuss robot improvements.  They had brought tools and materials and used the garage in the hotel after our scouting meeting to do some last minute construction on our minibot deployment system.

workingWe’re all going to bed now since it’s daylight savings tomorrow and we lose an hour.  Wake up call will be extra early!  Watch us tomorrow on the webcast (here).
