Minibots And More

We’ve got new minibots, or at least minibots that are under construction.  We want to thank Kraftwerk Manufacturing for helping us bend them to the right shape, and Queen’s University for helping with the waterjet cutting on a tight timeline.minibotM.E.L. (our Mobile Electric Loader) is now extra easy to move–she’s got a handle and wheels!

The next step is to mount the charging lights on the front, so we can see when our batteries are charged.  We’re getting good at soldering this year.soldering

We’re also getting good at drilling bear paws into our robot parts.  Our minibot deployer was cheeseholed today.bearpawAfter our bearing shipment comes in we’ll be ready to try out our new minibots.

A Long Day

After school some of us started preparing for our fundraiser in the evening…we sharpened almost 200 pencils!

sharpening

Others picked up the water-jet pieces that we’re using for St. Louis.  It’s fun to get new parts back from the shop.

We took our time with the deburring, making sure not to leave any sharp edges.

Others got to work on M.E.L.  She got a makeover today–braces removed….MEL

…and a fresh coat of paint.  She’s looking pretty good!MEL  At 6:00PM we were excited to see so many people arriving to take part in our fundraising test.  We had 52 people in attendance, which gets us approximately $1500 more for our trip to the Championships.  Parents, friends, high school students from our school and others, recent graduates, Queen’s students, teachers, nurses, and even some Cyberfalcon mentors!TEST

The test was long, and had lots of math.  Even after they finished, mentors kept discussing how to properly solve some of the questions!TEST

Our mentor Alex said of the test “This was generally less pleasant than my calculus exam earlier today.”

Frosh

Poor guy, he went from one exam to another!  Thanks for all the help everyone.  Thanks to those who wrote, and to those who organized the evening.

Raising Money

If you’d like to help out, please come to KCVI on Monday April 18th from 6-8PM and write an aptitude test!  We need 300 participants aged 17-42. (more info)

We would like to welcome the Limestone Learning Foundation, and the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area to the big purple K-Botics family!

LLF LogoCFKA logoWe’d also like to recognize and thank Queen’s University, Transformix Engineering, JKL Micro Distribution and the Limestone District School Board who have increased their sponsorship to help fund our trip to the World Championships.

Bottle Drive

Our first annual bottle drive was a brilliant success!

good start

We divided up into groups and went door to door collecting empty bottles and cans and even a keg!friends

We had some people come to drop off empties at the school parking lot.  Our friends the Cyberfalcons sent their mentor to help us out.

truck load

When the trucks arrived full of empties, we needed to sort them by colour of glass…sorting

We counted cans 200 per bag…then took trips to various beer stores to turn them in for cash.  counting

Look at the cash!good money

We wouldn’t have been able to do this fundraiser without the many hours of hard work by our team and family members.  It was a very long evening….but hard work pays off!counting

The big purple family can do wonderful things when we all work together!  Thanks everyone!

TGIF

Today’s adventure led us all around Queen’s campus putting up flyers for our bottle drive.  We’re spreading the word to the students and staff.  Since this is the last day of classes, we expect that there might be a bit of celebrating over the weekend–and we’ll be there to help clean up the neighbourhood and exchange bottles for a bit of cash.  We’re so glad that our Queen’s mentors are able to help us out during this busy time of year.

tubesOther adventures of the day included a tube throwing competition in the courtyard since teams and the semi-formal were taking over the gyms.  The courtyard is not ideal–it’s too small, but at least it’s not windy.  We’ve had some pretty good throws.

bear headOur bear mascot has a fan in the head now.  We’re working on making sure that nobody’s hair gets caught in it!  Safety first!

CADOur CAD crew has been hard at work and will continue to work all weekend long.  Drawing deadlines are coming up!

Planning and Progress

Today started early with a phone call.  Mr Wood will be speaking on the CBC radio at 8AM tomorrow!!!  We’ll be listening.

cbc radio

Work started quickly after school.  We have divided up our tasks, and made a plan to get things accomplished.

designing

We’re planning how to modify our minibot and deployment….we’re not sure what revision this is anymore!

minibot

We’re sorting our nuts and bolts to see what we need to order more of.

sorting

We’ve been inspired by other teams to build a rolling battery box that will hold more batteries than our current charger.  It’s going to be great!

battery box

Our team has realized how much extra money we will need for our trip to St. Louis.  We’re searching for creative ways to raise money.  bottle driveWe’re planning to run a bottle drive on Monday after school in the parking lot, and the Queen’s campus area.

fundraising

We’re busy making a video for our school recognition assembly.  Our school is pretty excited for our success!  It will be fun to show everyone some game footage of our robot in action.

recognition assembly

We had some cake today to celebrate our successful trip, and to celebrate the generosity of the Queen’s University Applied Science department who has donated funds to help us get to St. Louis.

We’re preparing for our parent teacher night demonstrations on Thursday evening.  We’re going to get Kasey I working again!!

Iron rings, minibots, and vinegar?

When we left for New York it was rainy.  When you drop your robot’s armour in the water, the ink runs a bit.  Today we are trying to make our armour pretty again for Toronto’s competition.  We scraped the old logo stickers off the armour using putty knives and vinegar.  The vinegar seemed to help loosen the paper, but it makes the whole lab stink!

scraping

We worked on cutting bits and pieces for the minibot deployment mechanism.

minibot deployment

Also to go along with the minibot deployment, we re-wired our minibot.  We’re aiming for it to be even faster than it was at New York.

reworking the minibotOur teachers and parent mentors spent lots of time figuring out how to mobilize our team and get carpools to Toronto.  coordination

Along with coordinating rides, we need to coordinate breakfast for all of the people going to competition.  How many bagels does it take to feed 47 people for 3 breakfasts?  How much cream cheese?  How much jam?  How much peanut butter?  It’s a scary number!  We did round one of bagel math to figure it out.  We’ll check our calculations again before hitting the grocery stores.

bagel mathWe also need to manage team clothing for all going on the trip.  Some of our teammates were very helpful and folded and packaged up the rest of the t-shirts that needed to be distributed before GTR.   Now everybody can finish packing! If you don’t have your shirts yet, you can pick them up tomorrow at our meeting! shirtsWe are excited to see some new iron rings in the room.  Our fourth year Queen’s  University engineering students received their iron rings this past weekend and were eager to show them off. Congrats to JNo, Kevin and Drew for their accomplishments!

ring buddies

Mike welcomes JNo to the club

Some of us spent lots of time today researching our competition for GTR.  We’ve noticed that many teams have not yet competed in a regional yet, but we’ll see them compete in Waterloo.  It will be exciting to watch!

Our big goal for tomorrow–CLEAN UP OUR ROOM and get the pit set up again.  We want to make sure we pack what we need in the right boxes, and we don’t want to forget anything.  apron of doom

We don’t want anyone to have to wear the apron of doom!

Warehouse Day Two

Day 43: We spent the day at the Transformix Engineering warehouse with team 3710, the Cyberfalcons, our rookie friends.  It was great to have the chance to try our robot out on the field with another robot.  We practiced some strategy for offense and defense, and practiced scoring lots of tubes.  It was nice to have some of our purple family visiting on reading week.  Mary, our driver from 2009 came to see how our current drive team is doing.

mary

After lots of practice, our driver gets really really sleepy!  He claims to just be “resting his eyes”…what do you think?

driver practice

We are so glad that we can put cardboard Mike away!  We now have our mentor Mike back with us.  We missed him lots!  Thanks for bringing back lots of energy Mikey!!!

mikey

Mike was not the only one with energy!  We’ve got lots of little friends who are very energetic!

fun with innertubes

Look at this!  It’s an energetic Tweedle-Falcon playing defense against our robot.  He’s doing a really good job too.

duncan the falcon

It’s nice to be working alongside another FRC team in these last few days.  We enjoy visiting with them, and sharing ideas.  They are great scrimmage partners, and they have also figured out how to keep Tetrix motors from burning out.  Here’s a picture, shared with permission of the Cyberfalcons.

tetrix solutionWe’re trying to repair our broken motors so we can test our minibot designs.

fixing tetrix

Our programmers were hard at work.  We’re getting a little frustrated with some issues with our jaguars.

“We’ve got toucans and jaguars working together….It’s like we’re the United Nations of the animal kingdom” -Duncan (Queen’s mentor)

programming is fun

We were extremely thankful for our marvelous dinner…not only did we have drinks, salad and muffins….

dinner time…we also had a barbeque!  We had no idea what was in store for us until we opened the door and saw a remarkable sight.  There were two BBQs set up, and also a kitchen stove (converted to run on propane).  Many thanks to the Calligaris family for the feast!

BBQ

yes, there is an oven!

Richard from Transformix came to visit us to see what we’re up to.  He’s impressed with how much work we’ve done so far.

Richard

We’ve been getting ready for family day.  It’s nice to have so many family members hanging out at the warehouse with us, helping us with our day-to-day work.  We appreciate the support and smiles from everyone who stops by to visit.

family time

….now here’s trouble!  They’re making a list, and checking it twice….perhaps they are up to something…..

making a plan
…These guys are up to something for sure!  Here’s our mentors competing in two-man luge….

two man luge

It’s coming down to the wire.  Everyone’s getting quite silly.  We’re all still friends, and that’s a good thing.  We look forward to a very fun and productive family day tomorrow.  We’re calling it PURPLE family day!

Warehouse Day One

Day 42: Today we are at Transformix Engineering‘s warehouse. We got here this morning and set up our quarter field.

set up

We are glad of the carpet that we brought back from GTR last year.

fieldOur robot is doing well, and has scored lots of tubes, even in autonomous mode!

scoringWe’re looking forward to seeing Frontenac’s team, the Cyberfalcons soon! They are bringing their robot to practice later today.

kbotics and cyberfalcons

Our driver and operator are hard at work…
drivers…but we’re all keeping busy with lots of little jobs.  We’ve been busy finishing up our circuit boards…

circuit boards…we make use of all little helpers we can find!

wheels

We have found lots of uses for our tubes.  They make great pillows…

nap time

…they are also really fun to throw!  We love the high ceilings in the warehouse.

tube tossOur Queen’s mentors are on their reading week now, and we are glad that they are staying in town to help us out!

Mentors

Thanks so much to the families who brought us food today.  It was great!

yummyWe’ve taken a second look at some things….including our minibot design.  We’re calling it “Minibot Revisited”.

minibot revisitedWe look forward to seeing everyone at the warehouse soon!  We work from 10AM-10PM today, Sunday and Monday too.inspiration

We Scored!

Day 39:  Today we had an important visitor!  Brenda Hunter, the Director of the Limestone District School Board came to visit our robotics team and see our progress.

tour

She asked us some great questions!  After touring our workspace and seeing our Logomotion robot, we watched our Chairman’s video, and discussed all of the non-robotic aspects of our team.

meeting

We have such fun together as a group.  We have learned so much over the past years.  Our skills have developed, and so has our confidence, and sense of community.  We look forward to what the future will bring for our team, and others in the area.

carpet

After our meeting, we got right to work!

carpet

We have taken over one of our hallways–unrolled carpet, and marked the field lines with duct tape.skype mentoring

We worked on circuit boards some more today.  They are coming along well.  It’s midterms, and our Queen’s mentors are studying a lot these days.  We were thrilled to have mentorship via Skype today!  Thanks for helping out Mike, we really appreciated it.

circuit boards

We may have had a slight issue with our minibot….(check out our rules)…here’s a kneecap…..

knee cap

All will be well, eventually, specially since we are allowed to start repairing parts of the Tetrix motors according to the latest Team Update.

hand washing

Here at K-Botics, we do everything as a team….including washing up for dinner.pizza!

Thanks so much to our school principal for ordering pizza for us tonight!  We appreciate all of the support our school gives us!

testing

Later in the evening we set up our scoring rack in the school hallway.  Our robot was able to score a few tubes!  It had difficulty on the top center peg because of our low ceilings.  Thanks to a clever custodian for removing a ceiling tile for us.  It made practice a lot easier!  We’ll be working from a warehouse space this weekend….with much higher ceilings!

Anica

We’re working hard, and are feeling excited about competition this year!  There’s lots to do in the last 6 days.
