Productive Brainstorming

Day 3 and we’re still going strong!  Today we met and discussed wheels and drive systems and we’ve now got a pretty good idea of what we’re going to do.

discussionAfter much debate and discussion, and CAD mock-ups we’ve also got a good plan for how we’re going to deal with the tube scoring mechanism.

prototypes prototype

Prototypes have been started, but we’re not showing much here….

pass the tube

We brainstormed by playing a game of “pass-the-tube” to generate ideas for how to grab or fling or move the logo pieces. Some of our ideas were pretty ridiculous, but that’s what brainstorming is all about.

field construction

Others in the group made good headway in constructing various parts of the field.  We’re not sure how to store such large racks in our classroom!

homeworkWe took breaks for dinner, snacks, and also homework.  Homework is very important!

media binderWe are thrilled to have another article to add to our media binder.  We were in the Whig Standard today with the Cyber Falcons (team 3710).  Kick off was mentioned on several local radio stations as well.  Pretty soon everyone in Kingston will have heard about us.displayTo spread the word about our club, and try to show people what fun we have, we put together a display for the case in front of the main office. We put two of our game pieces in there for safe keeping, along with some tools that we don’t need for the next week, and several colour pictures of our team in action.

mentorsWe asked our members, new and old, to give us a phrase to explain our team, or to dispel myths about what goes on at robotics club.  Each answer was cut out and taped to the glass on the front of the display case.

Here’s the most recent robotics hat, made by the masked man himself.  There’s even a knitted tongue sticking out!  You’ll never know what you’re going to see at robotics…

Come see what we do!

Thank You!

We got a present today!

scooterA very generous donor has given us their used scooter.  It has some issues that are not worth fixing, but it has lots of working parts too!  We look forward to dissecting it and putting the pieces to good use in our prototyping and our robots.

Today some of us had fun driving the scooter around the halls.

Tournament Count Down

teamWe got our new purple shirts today!  It’s just in time for our FLL practice tournament on Saturday.  There’s still some details to sort out–we’ve had some last minute additions to our tournament roster.  Scheduling 8 teams on the game table requires a bit of math!

While some of us planned, others kept going with our prototypes.  Our favourite little helper was sawing up a storm.

helping out

We worked hard to drill the holes in just the right places….

…and by the end of today’s meeting things started to take shape–we’ve got wheels now!

drive

It’s important to always clean up as you go.  Thank goodness for vacuum cleaners.

clean up

Far away from sawdust, our beta testers were busy installing new software that came in the mail today.

betatest

Others finished up writing thank you cards to our FLL judges and out of town tournament helpers.  We appreciate all the help that we are getting from our volunteers.

thank you

The fun begins on Saturday at 10AM (volunteers need to be there at 8:30, teams at 9).  Come see what amazing lego robots have been built by all of the FLL teams.

Two Thumbs Up!

The spirit of teamwork was everywhere today.  We’re all learning new skills, and then passing on those skills to our teammates.

Our prototyping of various mechanisms is making slow and steady progress.  We’re measuring, and securing parts together….

…and we’re making a more sturdy re-loading mechanism.

We’re also busy preparing for this Saturday when we’re hosting our 2nd annual FLL practice tournament.  We’ve all got jobs to do–and some of us will be demonstrating our big robots.  Sometimes our robots can be quite intimidating, so we’ve made a friendly sign to encourage questions, and interaction.

This is the same robot that is on our thank you cards this season.  We have some very artistic K-Bots!

hot off the press!

Today we had some special guests in our midst.  Limestone District School Board superintendent, Andre Labrie, came for a work room tour and robot demo.  We shared with him, the presentation that we will do for our sponsors to explain what FIRST is all about, what we do during our season, how our team is focused on collaboration, and what we’ve learned from being part of the team.  His feedback was very positive!

Along with our superintendent, we were also very pleased to have one of our mentors-from-afar back in town if only for the day.

We got to show off all of the interesting design features of last year’s robot, and show him how far we’ve come since 2009.

We’ve come a long way in 2 years.  Thanks to everyone who has helped make it happen!

Smile It Is Tuesday!

Today’s meeting began with an optimistic start, true to the K-Bot spirit! The whiteboard advised K-Bots to smile because its Tuesday, advice the team took to heart.

smileThere was a lot to smile about today- much work was accomplished and much fun was had while doing it. Much of the session was dedicated to the prototyping of a ball shooting mechanism for the robot.

boardThe creativity of K-Bots greatly came into play here; Joy concocted a ‘gastronomic device’ which is a funnel-shaped mechanism that would work from within the robot- sort of like a stomach and an esophagus, with the balls being “vomited”. Repulsive sounding, yes, but brainstorming is allowed certain ugliness.

Democracy was another thing to smile about today, for the voting polls were opened today! Elizabeth and Michaela channeled their artistic gift and ginger spirit into the decorating of a voting box today.

We are voting for a nominee for both the Dean’s List, and Woodie Flowers awards. Who will win? We have only to wait to find out!

Feats of Strength

As the fall sports season ends, we seem to be getting more new members to our team.  We welcome them, and are busy getting everyone up to speed with our design challenge and our prototypes.brainstorming

We have many different parts of our design ideas worked out.  We are now figuring out how to connect the pieces together.  Sometimes taking a break and drawing the ideas on the whiteboard helps us stay focused while brainstorming.

Our launcher now has been riveted together….and we are working hard to get a re-loader mechanism working properly

It’s getting close!

cheese hole

We’ve drilled some bear paw cheese holes too….just for practice!

We’re really excited to get a group together to start on our Chairman’s Report for this year.  It’s great to have our document from last year to work from.  We’d love to have the majority of the report finalized before build season starts.

Chairman's Report

As usual, it’s not ALL work at our meetings.  We took a bit of a break to test our strength.

Why We Wear Purple

We got a package in the mail today.  These are the samples for our team shirts this year.

purple shirts

Josh and Remi look great in purple

Do you know why purple, blue and white are our colours?

Purple is the colour that represents engineering.  Here’s one story that explains this tradition:
“While all the passengers of the Titanic were under panic and trying to save their own lives, the engineering crew were working non-stop to keep the furnace running at maximum. The smoke coming out of the enormous furnace could be seen miles away and gave the exact position of the sinking vessel to any ship on their way to rescue. The entire engineering crew of the Titanic went down with the ship.

The colour of the engineers’ overalls on the Titanic was purple. In honour of the engineers who died on board, purple was made the official colour of the engineering profession. Like the iron ring in Canada, purple is a reminder to all engineers of the history and responsibility of their profession.” Engineering Society of Queen’s University

We want to acknowledge our connection to our engineering mentors, and to Queen’s University for their support and sponsorship.

Blue and White are the colours of KCVI.  We proudly wear blue and white to represent our school wherever we go.  Our mascot is the KCVI Blue Bear.  That’s why our logo looks like a bear paw made of gears.

Beta-TestingWe also received a package for our beta-testers.  It’s so exciting to be able to start our testing with our new hardware.

beta testingOur team of keen programmers are learning lots every day!  We have many new members who are excited to see the guts of last year’s robot, and learn how the programming makes it move and operate.

robotOur builders were hard at work refining our prototypes as well.

Our communications team had a lot of fun drafting a paragraph for the school newsletter.  It’s hard to choose the right words to describe all of our activities.

Another really great part of today’s meeting was our dance lesson.  There are some great dancers on our team this year!  We look forward to being a very spirited group in the stands in New York City, and at GTR.

Multi-Tasking Tuesday

Today we worked on many different things.  Some of us were beta-testing programming, and others prototyped, and a few of us added the finishing touches to our bulletin board.  We use our bulletin board for communication amongst team members, and for raising awareness in the school. bulletin boardWe have put up our calendar, media coverage, some photos, folders with forms and newsletters, and now our very first edition of the K-Botics Quarterly.  Check it out for yourself!  We’re going to mail newsletters to our sponsors in the fall, winter, and spring.  We want everyone to be very informed this season!

Something special that we do, is to send thank you cards to our sponsors, friends and helpers to acknowledge contributions to our team.  We have a new design every year, created by the more artistic team members.  This year our thank you card robot is wearing a cool hat.

robot Maybe this was inspired by some of our knitted hats?JoshJosh has been wearing his new hat all day! little helperWe were glad to have a visiting member of the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. help us with our prototyping.  That new wheel that we used today made a big difference in our launching capabilities. launchWe also devised a plan for loading up our launcher with close to 20 balls.  We know that we are limited to three at a time for our competition, but it was fun to watch them all get launched at once.
