Recent Media Attention

K-Botics is the talk of the town!  We’ve had a great article in the Kingston EMC newspaper.

We also were pictured on the CTV coverage from Waterloo.

Last night we also were featured on our very own CKWS TV.

Great work to all who were interviewed!

In The Bag

The last day of build season was an exciting one!  Rodrigo was so excited that he wore his safety glasses all day long!safetyAfter school many parents volunteered to drive us to Transformix Engineering where we ate snacks and did homework….dinner…and worked on programming the robot….…and finishing up the wiring.electricalThanks so much to Transformix for letting us use their space for the weekend and letting us bag and tag tonight.  We’re making ourselves at home!  There are Queen’s jackets everywhere!Queen'sWe had a few visitors come to see the last exciting moments where our robot was driving around and shooting baskets.  It’s really thrilling to see everything come together at the last minute and work like it was supposed to!robot fan clubChris, from FESTO, was excited to see the pneumatic components in action.  He’s arranging FESTO giveaways for competition this season.FESTOWe also had our follow-up with CKWS TV.  It was exciting to have media present for the final moments of our build.  Bag and Tag was officially documented this year, and a two part series about our team will air Monday and Tuesday at the 6pm news on CKWS.CKWSOne minor hiccup that we had to negotiate before bagging the robot was our bumper design.  After recent clarification our original split number bumper was deemed to be against the rules.  We quickly made some patches to sew on.  bumperThere were still plenty of people taking naps on the sidelines…It will take time to regain all of the lost sleep from recent days.sleepyWith 30 minutes to go, we separated our shooting device from the robot to hold back and work on over the next little while.  Thank goodness for a withholding allowance!removing witholding allowanceThere was great hustle near the robot, and also in the Transformix lunch room.  We cleaned up all of our dishes and food and prepared for the excitement of putting the robot into the bag.cleaning upBut first…we needed to weigh our robot.  Using the bathroom scales gave us one estimate…weighing…Transformix’s industrial scale gave us another….weightWith a 20 pound shooter, we’re under weight!  bag and tagWe gathered at 11:50 to bag our robot.  Everyone wanted to be a part of the momentous occasion.CKWSIt’s all caught on film!doneWith a sigh of relief and a few cheers we were done, with a few minutes to spare!happyIt’s a strange feeling to be done building.  We’re used to seeing each other every day, and now we’ll take a day to rest and recover before we start thinking of all that remains to be completed before going to competition.  sad it's overWe’ll miss each other in the mean time though!  Good work everyone.  Thanks to all of our families and supporters for helping us through an intense 6 weeks.  Enjoy your rest.

Day 31: Putting It All Together

Today we were excited to welcome the CKWS news into our workspace.  We showed what we’ve been working on, and what a finished robot has looked like in the past.on the newsSome of our team were interviewed.  We’re thankful for our media training sessions.  CKWS will be filming again on Bag and Tag day, Feb. 21st at the warehouse at midnight.  It will be exciting to see ourselves on TV, but we’ll have to wait until after the 21st! interviewMany projects got worked on today.  Chains are now adjusted…chainSupport plates have been made…battery mountGear boxes have been assembled…gear boxMotors are now on our chassis…motorsAnd the wiring is in full swing.wiringAs in years past, we’re making an electrical box to house our components.  We’re getting fancy with colour coding this year.  The electrical box will be very pretty!electrical boxOur whole robot will be very pretty this year.  We can’t wait to see it in its final state.  For now, we will be satisfied to admire the CAD on the computer screen.  Families and friends are always impressed to see what we’ve been up to.  Please feel free to drop by and have a look!our designWe’re continuing to work hard, making parts and assembling our robot.  Safety is very important–we all wear safety glasses in the back of our workspace.safe cuttingSome of us even wear them when we go for dinner!  safe at dinnerWe’re starting a new fashion trend.

K-Bots: We’re meeting this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.  This is a very critical weekend.  We need all hands on deck to assemble the robot pieces.  Be here, be positive, be productive, and be safe!

We also want to emphasize the importance of cleaning up!!apron of doomIf you do not clean up, you’ll have to wear the “apron of doom”

Day 20: Weighty Decisions

Today we had to make some decisions about weight.  Our robot looks like it might be a bit heavy.  We are not sure what (if any) mechanisms we need to do without, or how much mass can be removed through cheeseholing.discussionsWe experimented with the bridge, to see how possible it will be to get three robots balanced on it.  We needed to use extra weights from the weightroom next door to simulate the situation.heavy robotProgramming is happening…programming…and it looks like the camera is working!  Here’s a robot-eye-view of the bridge balancing experience.robot-eye-viewWe worked with sensors, and are deciding which kinds of sensors give us the best data.  sensorFor some of us, today was a great time to get hands dirty, greasygreasing a gear box.  greasing gearsOthers spent their time evaluating our website, and looking for scouting information about other nearby teams.webWe’re thrilled to announce that CKWS will be following our team this season, and will be in to film on Fridays.  In preparation, we have had a media workshop to prepare for speaking in live interviews.  media prepLunch was delicious chili and yummy desserts.  Thanks again parents for all you do to support our team.  By eating together, and laughing together, strong bonds are formed.  We enjoy getting to know families too.  Many little siblings are excited to grow up and join our team.lunchDuring lunch we had some very interesting discussions “Why go on a date when you can play Starcraft” etc.

Later in the day we welcomed the Cyberfalcons (FIRST Team 3710) to join us and use our bridge and work room.back to back programmingIt’s nice to have our workroom buzzing with activity.  It’s also nice to see how other teams are approaching the design challenges.  We look forward to sharing warehouse space with them during the last week of build.

Day 16: Smiles All Around

Day 16:  We got lots of great news today!  Our machine shop scheduling issues have been resolved!  Thanks to Transformix Engineering and McLaughlin Hall at Queen’s University!smilesOur orders have been coming in so we’re unpacking boxes, and moving forward with our plans.  The biggest excitement came when boxes of electrical components were unpacked.

There were MORE smiles when we had a surprise snack delivery!  We love it when parents experiment with making large quantities of food, and show up at our door.  delicious“The muffins are SO DELICIOUS!” -Liam, grade 9

A Tweedle in a Trap!

We worked hard to modify some of our robot structure and try some new ideas.  There are some creative ideas that we’ve been working on.  Look at this…we even smile while we’re sawing!prototypePart way through our work session today we took a time out to learn about talking with the public, particularly to judges and to the media.  We are lucky that CKWS TV, our local TV station is interested in following us through build season, checking in from time to time, watching our robot grow and develop, and watching us come together as a team.

workshopWe look forward to the opportunity to share FIRST Robotics with the rest of Kingston!

Food Factor: FLL Tournament

Our tournament today was a big success!  We arrived a little bleary eyed at 7 AM, but by 8 AM everyone was ready to go and our school gym was buzzing with activity as teams arrived and set up, robots were tested on practice tables.

We showed our past season’s robot and offered driving lessons to our younger friends.  Many parents and judges were really intrigued with what we can accomplish during a 6 week build season.  We invited them to come and visit us sometime in January to see us in action!

robotics is the gateway drug for our future!

Thanks to all of the K-Bots who helped to keep things running smoothly today, from set up and registration, timing, cuing, working with FLL teams, working with judges, driving our robot, monitoring practice tables, being referees MCs DJs and the blue bear, cooking lunch, moving tables, writing thank you cards, taking great photographs, operating video cameras, making slideshows, dancing with enthusiasm, talking with media, and helping with all of the clean up.  Special thanks to Christine for organizing the entire event.

See you all again on Thursday when we’ll go to Transformix for a tour (time is not yet confirmed).  Permission forms are needed to go on this field trip.  Parent drivers would be greatly appreciated too–there are volunteer driver forms to fill out before driving.

We’re on Popular Mechanics

Look at this!  Popular Mechanics has talked about our roller claw design on their website.  They showed a video of the claw in action.  It’s exciting to be getting all of this media exposure.  popmech

We’re on CNN

A photograph and caption about our team is featured in the photo slideshow on the CNN website!

We’re excited about this, and we’ll all be looking forward to watch the documentary “Don’t Fail Me: Education in America” by Soledad O’Brien which airs this Sunday, May 15th at 8pm.  Here’s a video trailer to give you an idea of what you’ll see Sunday night.

Robots, Parents And More Preparation

We’ve divided up into subgroups to accomplish all of our tasks.  There’s nothing like the world championships to kick us into high gear!  Our minibot plans are coming along.  We’re modifying some CAD drawings to come up with some new ideas.

Candy 2.0?

We’re repairing our mascot costume.  It’s getting a new fan!  Maybe it wont be so sweaty in there now.

mascot brain surgery

We’re sorting through our scrap metal to see what is useful to bring along with us to competition.

packing and sorting

And, very importantly, we’re making sure that homework gets done.  When we’re missing lots of class to go to competitions, we have to be sure to catch up when we get back.  We’re gathering up a lot of work to bring for the bus ride to St. Louis.  18+ hours….we can read Lord of the Flies in that time!

homework

Tonight some of us stayed to do a demo for the Parent Teacher Interviews.  We kept things entertaining in the hallway between the two gyms where interviews were taking place.

parent teacher night

We had game footage of Kasey III (Barbra), and we had Kasey I on display.  It is fun to shoot moon rocks at each other!  Parents enjoyed seeing our robot in action.demo

We look forward to showing them what Barbra can do!

Robot Status Update:

Barbra is in Toledo, and on schedule to arrive in St. Louis on April 8th.

P.S. Check out K-Botics in today’s Kingston This Week!  There’s a great photo and article.

Productive Brainstorming

Day 3 and we’re still going strong!  Today we met and discussed wheels and drive systems and we’ve now got a pretty good idea of what we’re going to do.

discussionAfter much debate and discussion, and CAD mock-ups we’ve also got a good plan for how we’re going to deal with the tube scoring mechanism.

prototypes prototype

Prototypes have been started, but we’re not showing much here….

pass the tube

We brainstormed by playing a game of “pass-the-tube” to generate ideas for how to grab or fling or move the logo pieces. Some of our ideas were pretty ridiculous, but that’s what brainstorming is all about.

field construction

Others in the group made good headway in constructing various parts of the field.  We’re not sure how to store such large racks in our classroom!

homeworkWe took breaks for dinner, snacks, and also homework.  Homework is very important!

media binderWe are thrilled to have another article to add to our media binder.  We were in the Whig Standard today with the Cyber Falcons (team 3710).  Kick off was mentioned on several local radio stations as well.  Pretty soon everyone in Kingston will have heard about us.displayTo spread the word about our club, and try to show people what fun we have, we put together a display for the case in front of the main office. We put two of our game pieces in there for safe keeping, along with some tools that we don’t need for the next week, and several colour pictures of our team in action.

mentorsWe asked our members, new and old, to give us a phrase to explain our team, or to dispel myths about what goes on at robotics club.  Each answer was cut out and taped to the glass on the front of the display case.

masked man

Here’s the most recent robotics hat, made by the masked man himself.  There’s even a knitted tongue sticking out!  You’ll never know what you’re going to see at robotics…
