Preparations

We met today to prepare for Kick Off.  It’s hard to believe that it is on Saturday!  Our chairman’s report is well underway.  We’re trying to have it mostly done before this weekend so we can spend our time and effort brainstorming and building an awesome robot.

We also prepared advertising for around the school to encourage our friends and teachers to come to Kick Off with us.  We hung up our new safety posters to remind everyone about wearing the right equipment.safety poster

Of course, there’s always time for snacks!

Practice Kick Off

The days are ticking down, ever closer to January 8th when our challenge will be released.  To prepare for this special day, we had a practice run using the game from 2007–Rack and Roll.

rackandrollWe watched the animation on youtube, and scrutinized the rules that are archived on the FIRST website.  We split up into three smaller groups and brainstormed about ways to play the game.  There are many different strategies for all of the FIRST robotics challenges, so we kept ourselves busy for a while!

brainstormAfter writing our ideas on chart paper and white boards, we presented them to the rest of our team.

presentingWe compiled all of the ideas using software called SMART ideas.  So many times we brainstorm but lose some key points along the way.  Using the software allows everything to be documented graphically and then converted to a text document.

SMART ideasWe hope to use this approach for our kick off on January 8th as well.

How do you document your brainstorming?

K-Botics In The Whig Standard

We were all very pleased to see ourselves on the front page of the Kingston Whig Standard today.  We hope that you also enjoy the article and pictures.  This season is off to a great start already!

FRC Kickoff 2010

2010…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1… BLASTOFF!

We assembled to watch the kickoff webcast of the 2010 FIRST Robotics Challenge, routed live by NASA into our K-botics home base at KCVI. Teammates and parents all arrived to socialize and watch the webcast and learn the new game which will consume our lives for the next 6 weeks of Build Season.

we are watching

Before introducing the new game for 2010, the power players of the FIRST organization were broadcast across the world. Dean Kamen, inventor and co-founder of FIRST, particularly caught my attention as he spoke about the purpose of the entire event.

the FIRST Robotics Competition is not about robots; it is about teaching teens and youth life lessons, educating them in “coopartition” and gracious professionalism.

Woodie Flowers, the other co-founder, noted that in school students normally receive ‘training’ rather than education.  Students learn to repeat information rather than use skills to make decisions.

The goal of FIRST is to ‘educate’ us as we learn, hands on, about robotics, competition and teamwork (both within our team and also among rival teams.)

After the speaking came the long-awaited game animation!

The overall idea is similar to soccer, with the following exceptions:

  • the field is divided into thirds by ‘bumps’ like speed bumps which can be driven over or under via a tunnel
  • there are two towers in the field which the robots will try to hang from at the end of the game.
  • there are 3 robots on each team, for a total of 6 robots on the field.
  • There are 4 nets
  • The game is 2 minutes and 15 seconds long

Scoring is as follows:

  • 1 point per ball scored
  • 2 points for suspending your robot on the tower at the end of the game
  • 3 points for suspending another robot from your robot at the end of the game.

There are also many penalties, for pinning other robots, or other offenses.

we are brainstorming

We are now making some big decisions: will our robot be…

Offensive or defensive?

Specialized or generalized?

Going over bumps or through tunnels?

To help make decisions we trekked downstairs to the gym to try modeling some situations.

we are robots

We played a couple rounds, using ourselves as robots and trying out different strategies and robot placements.  Our observations definitely helped us make better design decisions.

After eight hours at school on a Saturday we prorogued for the evening.

BUILD SEASON HAS BEGUN!

Kick-Off Excitement is Growing!

Holidays are over, and we are back in full swing here at K.C.V.I.  It’s hard to believe that kick off is less than a week away!

Our team this year is already working on fundraising.  We are selling advertising space in our team’s yearbook.  We’ve approached several local establishments, and will be continuing in the upcoming weeks.

We are learning programming skills, and have been fixing up and modifying several older robots to develop our mechanical skills.

Our team is learning more and more every week.  We are definitely more organized than we were at this time last year!

Kick off Details:  Invite your family and friends!

Saturday January 9 2010 9:00AM, webcast at 10:00AM

KCVI room 107

Potluck snacks are welcome

We will spend the afternoon and Sunday learning the rules and brainstorming robot ideas.

Preparing for FRC Kick-Off 2010

We will be gathering on January 9th at 9:00 AM to watch the NASA webcast of the First Robotics Competition (FRC) 2010 Kick-Off.    To join us in spirit, please click here and watch any time from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Early January will be filled with figuring out how to play the game and brainstorming different robot designs to accomplish our goals.  After choosing our design, we will begin prototyping and manufacturing our robot, working on programming, and learning how to drive it.

Feel free to check back in from time to time during the build season (January 9th-February 23rd) to see what we’re up to.

Thanks for your interest and support!
