Food Factor: FLL Tournament

Our tournament today was a big success!  We arrived a little bleary eyed at 7 AM, but by 8 AM everyone was ready to go and our school gym was buzzing with activity as teams arrived and set up, robots were tested on practice tables.

robotics is the gateway drug for our future!

Thanks to all of the K-Bots who helped to keep things running smoothly today, from set up and registration, timing, cuing, working with FLL teams, working with judges, driving our robot, monitoring practice tables, being referees MCs DJs and the blue bear, cooking lunch, moving tables, writing thank you cards, taking great photographs, operating video cameras, making slideshows, dancing with enthusiasm, talking with media, and helping with all of the clean up.  Special thanks to Christine for organizing the entire event.

See you all again on Thursday when we’ll go to Transformix for a tour (time is not yet confirmed).  Permission forms are needed to go on this field trip.  Parent drivers would be greatly appreciated too–there are volunteer driver forms to fill out before driving.

FLL Tournament Preparations

Tonight we gathered in the evening, after all of the sports teams had finished their games, and we transformed our school gymnasium into an FLL tournament venue.setting up

We set up the tournament tables and practice tables in the gym…

It was a big job to make sure that each of the rooms had all of the required information for each set of judges.

organization

We were thankful to the many K-Bots who gave up their Friday evening to help set up–many hands do make light work!  Thanks also to Richard, one of our mentors from Transformix Engineering, who came out to help.  He’s getting excited for build season, just like we all are.

We worked together to make sure our robot was demo ready, and looking great!  Everyone headed home and straight to bed.  We’re expected to be at our posts at 7:00AM tomorrow.

Super Top Secret Design Challenge

Our meeting this week was busy and productive.  We debriefed about our bottle drive experience, and plan to hold another one that is bigger and better in the spring–so parents….please save your empties for us!

Look who showed up today!  Remi….who is modelling our “Apron of Doom”–if you do not clean up, you must wear it! (here are some classic apron pictures)  Remi is working on putting together an order of hoodies.  Think about whether you are interested in purchasing a team hoodie this year.  Prices and designs will be coming your way soon!

remiWe discussed the plans for the FIRST LEGO league tournament, and Jr. FIRST LEGO League Expo that we’re hosting on December 3rd.  We look forward to lots of our K-Bots volunteering to help out with set up on December 2nd in the evening, and with the running of the event on December 3rd.  We’ll be hard at work by 8 until probably 5 or 6.  There’s lots of volunteer hours available!  There are many jobs for students to do, from helping with registration, being good tour guides of our school for all of the visiting teams, cooking a delicious pasta lunch for our judges, and even taking a turn being the blue bear to help lead cheering!  For more information please contact Christine.

CADOur group split up for rotations of CAD tutorial work–some of us are getting really good at the practical applications of CAD.

CAD superstar

Others are getting really good at the impractical applications of CAD.  Meet Geoffrey the dragon!  GeoffreyWe held a brainstorming rotation for Chairman’s report ideas, and activities we should engage in over the year to help our community and build up our team.  We also walked everyone through the STIMS registration and online consent forms for FIRST.  Students and parents both must complete the process for the permission forms to be complete.brainstorming

Our beta testers were busy getting Barbra Streisand (Kasey III) up and running, as an important beta-testing deadline is coming up next week.

betatestingThe remaining station was a super top secret design challenge. Groups had 30 minutes and a variety of materials (wheels, newspaper, straws, plastecine, skewers, cardboard, wood, screws, saws, measuring devices, and lots of tape) to construct a vehicle that was powered by a balloon that could travel the farthest down the school hallway.

During the 30 minutes, each group needed to plan, prototype, construct, test and modify their design, as well as demonstrate good communication and teamwork skills.

discussing building

Since each group worked in isolation, the vehicles produced were unique.  Some had wheels, some didn’t.  Some used an inflated balloon, others used it as a slingshot.

balloon on steroids

that balloon's on steroids!

slingshot

If the car breaks, and part of the car goes the farthest, it still counts....right?

the real car is Sam

The real car is Sam....the balloon is just the distraction!

no wheels

look mom--no wheels!

We all learned a lot during this challenge.  It’s important to use time wisely–to allow time for testing and modifications–to plan before building–and to bring spare parts to the competition.  We had lots of fun, even if the vehicles did not travel too far down the hallway!  This might be a challenge we’ll revisit in the future.

durable?

we'll work on durability of designs...

Pre-Season…Post-Season…it’s all a bit blurry!

We’re in the foggy gray zone of post-season wrap up and pre-season planning.  We’re cleaning up our workroom and making sure our tools are back where they can easily be found.  We’ve cleaned out our filing cabinet, and organized files on the computer hard drive.

planning

mentors hard at work planning

We’re making our 2009 robot demo-ready for the Relay For Life on May 13th. We’re preparing newsletters and contacting the media about our recent St. Louis competition.

brainstormingWhile we’ve got ideas fresh in our minds we’re making up a handbook for new members, and we’re also coming up with ideas for  fundraising and we’re always looking for new sponsors, so we’re refreshing our sponsorship package.

student handbookWe’re always learning!  It’s a good time to brush up on CAD skills.  CADMonday we’re going to Frontenac Secondary School at 5:00PM to learn technical drawing with our good friend the Cyberfalcons, team 3710.  It’s going to be a fun pre-season!!

Showing Off LEGO Skills

We had such a fun time today after school!  We were thrilled to help Module Vanier host an event to practice LEGO robotics skills.  Twenty teams from six elementary schools worked cooperatively to build and program LEGO robots to get through the course that we designed.lego

The challenge that we created was medieval in theme.  The teams needed to drive over the grass (carpet), around or over a fallen log (dowel), up a ramp, to lower the drawbridge, down the ramp and into the castle.  Once in the castle they needed to collect as much gold (foil wrapped candy) as they could.

trial run

Students were brainstorming, problem solving, building and programming for 2 hours.

programming

The design process requires many iterations, and attention to detail.

Everyone was excited to see how many points they could gather.  Some teams even got filmed for the local news!news

For some, this was their first competition.  For others, it was one of many that they will do over the course of the year.  We’re excited to help support the LEGO robotics programs in our local elementary schools.practice

We know that in the future many of these youngsters will want to get involved in FLL and FRC teams.  We look forward to showing them our robot after competition season is over.hardworkers

Many thanks to all involved in the creation of the LEGO challenge used today.  Thanks especially to Kylie for taking the lead on this project.

Dragons, Oh My!

Only a few days after build season, we’re hard at work again! Today, some K-bots got together at a top-secret location to work on our challenge that we are putting together for a practice Lego Robotics Competition. We’ll be helping one of our local elementary schools host the practice competition this Thursday.

Dragon for our Medieval Theme

We have been having lots of fun designing a challenge that is medieval themed!

Duct Tape Solves everything!

After some design changes to make sure that our challenges will fit into our space constraints (our challenge boards have to fit into the back of a parent volunteer’s car!), we were eager to start building! As always, we discovered that duct tape can solve almost anything!

Marbl;es for the challenge

Some of us have been working very hard over the last few days to find some materials that we can use to make our challenge more interesting- we’ve been sorting through not only our tool boxes but also our old toys!

Textured Surface for the challenge

We are including lots of different elements in our challenge… we might be including anything from textured surfaces…

Black Tape for Line Following

To black tape for line following…

Yarn for challenge!

And, of course, we knitters can use yarn for almost anything!

But we can’t tell you exactly what the challenge is yet, because some of our younger LEGO Robotics friends might be reading our blog, and it’s a surprise!

We’re so excited to see what the elementary school students come up with at the on Thursday! It will be fun to see how the different teams come up with different ways to complete our challenges.  We hope to inspire many teams to learn more LEGO robotics skills, and to form FLL teams for the upcoming year.

It’s In The Bag!

Today started off with some bad news.  Last night, after most of us went home, our robot became “brain-dead”.  There were problems….maybe with software…maybe with the cRIO….maybe with the Jaguars.  In any case, these problems had not been solved by morning.  We were also struggling to get connectors.  We ordered them from Digi-Key on Family Day, and we weren’t sure if they’d arrive before bag and tag time.

One K-Bot got a new hat today….so they were happy!

new hatBy 3:00PM all luck had changed.  Our connectors had arrived!  (Digi-Key has amazingly fast delivery).

thank you digi-key

Thank You Digi-Key

We had also developed several theories to explain the brain-dead behaviour of our robot.fixing things

Plan in place, at 4:00PM we set up at Transformix, excited to solve our problems.  We changed programming….we tested connectors…

…and in no time at all, the robot came back to life!  It was driving, and scoring tubes better than ever before!

Transformix TourIt was nice to have an operational robot, specially when Transformix staff had come to visit us. Richard gave it a good test drive.

Everyone was impressed at what we can accomplish in 6 weeks.

autonomous scoring

We’re impressed with what else we can do these days…we’ve been able to score two tubes in autonomous mode!   Our big robot may be done, but our minibot is still being tested.  Here’s a picture of some of the things that are NOT on the minibot….

not on the minibot

We’ve built an awesome robot, and made some great friendships over the past 6 weeks.  Spending so much time together creates some pretty strong bonds, and memories, and inside jokes.

We know that there are always shoulders to lean on, and others who will help you up when you fall down.

mentor friends

silly mentors!

After a long evening of robot testing and drive practice, minibot experimentation, and programming discussions we noticed that the time was creeping towards midnight.  We began the fun task of deflating all of the tubes to transport them back to the school.  It seems like not so long ago that we were blowing them all up!

Some lasted really well…

bag and tag

Within the last 30 minutes we weighed our robot…we’re within 1-2 lbs of our goal.

baggingWe ziptied moving parts so they wouldn’t get damaged, we decided what parts to include in our withholding allowance, and then we bagged and tagged our robot.

We’re also just entering the planning stages for a LEGO robotics challenge day for our local elementary schools.  As a team, we keep pretty busy.  We are excited to give our young friends the opportunity to practice their LEGO skills.  We look forward to seeing many of these teams at our FLL tournament in the fall of 2011.

Many thanks go to the staff and management at Transformix Engineering.  We appreciate the use of their facilities, and their continued support of our team.

Welded!

Day 19: Thanks so much to Derek at McLaughlin Hall, Queen’s University, for welding our chassis for us.welding

It’s going to be exciting to see our robot start to take shape!

In the mean time, we were busy here back at KCVI.  We have been helping with the Vanier Vipers FLL team.  They are so keen to keep practicing, they have kept up their meetings long past their competition.  They even requested to borrow one of our field tables again.  It’s great that we can help spread the love of science, technology, engineering, and robotics fun with other students within our building.  Maybe they will be K-Bots in the next few years.

lego set up

We were excited to welcome our principal this afternoon.  She came for a workshop tour and to see what our challenge is this year.  She’s excited to see our progress over the next few days and weeks.

We ended up in rather a state today…While working with our gearboxes we realized that there had been a problem made earlier in the process.  Rivets needed to be removed, which left aluminum shavings in amongst the gears.  We had to take everything apart and make sure that the gears were clean.  We greased them again, and reassembled the boxes.

We explained to our principal all about the gear boxes and why we were taking them apart and putting them back together again.

Good Luck At Provincials

We would like to wish our friends the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. and the Legendary LEGO Legion good luck at the provincial FLL tournament today. We’ve got mentors, team mates, children and siblings involved with these teams! Play well and have fun.

A Great Weekend!

Earlier this month our good friends the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. FLL team qualified for the provincial competition.  Yesterday we learned that they will be joined by our friends the Legendary LEGO Legion!  We saw these teams in action during our practice tournament, and we knew that there’d be big things in store for them this season.

We were also pleased to see team 2809 W.A.F.F.L.E.S VEX team do so well in their competition in St. Catherine’s yesterday.  We’re proud of all their hard work.  The long hours of building and learning resulted in a great robot that won them a “Build” award and “Amaze” award.

Congratulations to all!!
