Kickoff 2012: Rebound Rumble

Day 1:

This morning we gathered with our friends the Cyberfalcons before the webcast to drive robots and get organized.  We were glad to see so many families and sponsors join us for kickoff.

demo

Some of the littlest visitors got to test drive the robot.  They did a really good job.

We even had cardboard Mike here!mikeOur auditorium was a perfect location to watch the webcast.  We had the big screen and big sound this year!  Thanks to our talented A-V crew for getting that hooked up and running smoothly.

auditorium

We saw lots of famous people on the webcast….from former presidents, to TV celebrities, and will.i.am!

will.i.am

Finally, after a lot of waiting, the game was released.  We’re playing Rebound Rumble this year….a modified game of 3-on-3 basketball!

rebound rumble

Here’s the game animation that was released during the NASA webcast today.

After the game was released we enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch.  Thanks so much to everyone for bringing such a great variety of food, and thanks specially to the parents who organized the clean up!

lunch

After During lunch, we stocked up on sugar…

cupcakes marshmallow robots

….and started to discuss robot strategy

strategy

After lunch we watched the game video and read the rules enough to understand the game.  Then, after brainstorming a few strategies, we simulated the game in the gym.

coopertition

We have done this each year, and learn a lot from the activity.

game

We get a good idea of what offensive and defensive strategy might look like.  We get a feel for the timing of the game…and we have some fun being silly together.

hoops

We like having fun together.

friends

It looks like the Cyberfalcons like having fun together too.

Frontenac

It was fun simulating the robot game with them today.  We look forward to meeting them in the not so distant future in a warehouse to play the game with real robots!

Kit

We need to thank the Cyberfalcons for bringing our kit back to Kingston for us from Toronto.  We got right to work doing a careful inventory and labeling the new motors and jags with 2012, so they don’t get confused with the old ones.

label

It’s a very special job to use the label maker….

2012

We’ve outgrown our lab space for brainstorming sessions….

full house

…so we split up into smaller groups to brainstorm.

strategizing

We’re focused on what kinds of things we want our robot to be able to do.  We also want to consider how to score the most ranking points.  Finally we returned and presented our ideas to the larger group.

presenting

We have combined the ideas from the various groups into a list of objectives for our robot this year.  Tomorrow we’ll start to get some of the specifics worked out.

clean up

At the end of the day, we cleaned up the demo, and cleared the decks for tomorrow’s work session.

sleepy

Everyone’s been sent home to get a good night’s sleep, and to dream up great robot designs!  We’ll be at KCVI (room 107) tomorrow from 10-6.

Beta Test Open House

We had a great time today showing off our driving skills with the Kinect.  Students and mentors for K-Botics and the Cyberfalcons (team 3710) were in attendance.

betatest

We showed off how easy it is to drive the robot around the room using the Kinect system.

Even one of our custodial staff gave it a whirl.  He was a natural!betatest

We’re excited to see how the Kinect will be incorporated into this year’s challenge.  The countdown to Kick-Off is in full swing–28 days left!

Food Factor: FLL Tournament

Our tournament today was a big success!  We arrived a little bleary eyed at 7 AM, but by 8 AM everyone was ready to go and our school gym was buzzing with activity as teams arrived and set up, robots were tested on practice tables.

All morning teams presented their projects, robots, and core values for judging panels.

judgingThe hallways were buzzing with excited teams, coaches and parents.  For some teams this was their very first FLL competition!

food factor

Each team was assigned a K-Bot to be their guide for the day.  We love making connections with our FLL friends and we look forward to seeing them in the next few years at competition, and eventually when they join us in high school!

food factor

We showed our past season’s robot and offered driving lessons to our younger friends.  Many parents and judges were really intrigued with what we can accomplish during a 6 week build season.  We invited them to come and visit us sometime in January to see us in action!

demo

Along with the FLL tournament, we also had a Jr. FLL Expo happening at the same time.  Our two teams were the Mini W.A.F.F.L.E.S. from Kingston, and the GermBusters from Brampton Ontario.  Many thanks to the GermBusters for making the trip to Kingston to join us.  We hope to see them again next year!

quote

robotics is the gateway drug for our future!

Thanks to all of the K-Bots who helped to keep things running smoothly today, from set up and registration, timing, cuing, working with FLL teams, working with judges, driving our robot, monitoring practice tables, being referees MCs DJs and the blue bear, cooking lunch, moving tables, writing thank you cards, taking great photographs, operating video cameras, making slideshows, dancing with enthusiasm, talking with media, and helping with all of the clean up.  Special thanks to Christine for organizing the entire event.

See you all again on Thursday when we’ll go to Transformix for a tour (time is not yet confirmed).  Permission forms are needed to go on this field trip.  Parent drivers would be greatly appreciated too–there are volunteer driver forms to fill out before driving.

FLL Tournament Preparations

Tonight we gathered in the evening, after all of the sports teams had finished their games, and we transformed our school gymnasium into an FLL tournament venue.setting up

We set up the tournament tables and practice tables in the gym…

…and another set in each of the technical judging rooms.

setting up

Quality control was very important for this job!

quality control

We put up signs all over the school to lead people to the various important locations…

signs

We’ve reused all of the signs from last year!

signs

It was a big job to make sure that each of the rooms had all of the required information for each set of judges.

organization

We were thankful to the many K-Bots who gave up their Friday evening to help set up–many hands do make light work!  Thanks also to Richard, one of our mentors from Transformix Engineering, who came out to help.  He’s getting excited for build season, just like we all are.

mentors

We worked together to make sure our robot was demo ready, and looking great!  Everyone headed home and straight to bed.  We’re expected to be at our posts at 7:00AM tomorrow.

Robot at Parent Teacher Night

This evening, we brought Kasey III to parent teacher interview night to show off the product of our hard work last build season.

demo

It is a great opportunity to spread the word about FIRST and K-Botics to the parent community.  demo

It’s also a great opportunity for new K-Bots to get a chance to drive the robot, and to get experience making some repairs.

repairs

It seems like there are always repairs to be made!

K-Botics Goes To The Ball

K-Botics was invited to do a demonstration at the Limestone Learning Foundation Crystal Palace Gala, a black tie fundraising event for the Limestone Learning Foundation, which donates money for educational initiatives throughout the school board.

We packed up our robot in the pouring rain in the middle of the afternoon and set up at the K-Rock Center (our local arena) along with many other student projects.

set up
We had never been to a black tie event before. We all dressed up for the occasion–no jeans!

formal k-botsWe were excited to show our robot to so many people, and to thank the Limestone Learning Foundation for all of their support last year.

demoBefore long, the room was packed with people enjoying their champagne reception.

receptionAfter our demonstration ended, the gala began. The K-Rock center was decorated very beautifully with seating for 700 to enjoy a 3 course meal and fabulous live entertainment by local students and famous musicians.inside the gala

One of the more exciting performances for us was watching KCVI’s representative sing with Rob Baker of the Tragically Hip.performers

Thanks to all who helped get our robot demo set up, and cleared away, as well as everyone who came to the event to represent our team.

Welcome New K-Bots

We were excited to welcome 40 new and returning K-Bots to our big purple family. Our more experienced members had a great workshop to get people mixing and mingling and to introduce FIRST and our team.new members

After name games we split up into groups to practice our teamwork skills and our design creativity.  We tried to build the tallest newspaper tower!newspaper tower
Each group had a different approach to teamwork and to the design process.  Everyone had a chance to share their ideas and contribute to building some pretty fantastic creations.

teamworkHere are the results:  Group 1 had a really tall tower!  They took advantage of having several really tall people in their group who could put the top pieces on.

Group 1

Group 1

Group 2:  This tower was the only one that could fit an entire person inside it.  This group had lots of fun while building, and seemed to focus on triangles!

group 2

Group 2

Group 3: This tower was starting off well with a sturdy base as a foundation, but after a few attempts it ended up toppling over.  This group was very spirited, and had fun throughout the entire building process.

Group 3

Group 3

People might wonder what building newspaper towers has to do with building a robot.  Although groups were tasked with building a tower, the real goal of the activity is to build a team!

snacksWe had delicious snacks (Thanks Megan!)

demoThen our robots were on display in the hallway and everyone got a chance to drive and operate Kasey I and Kasey III.

We’re keen to see everyone back again next Thursday when we start our pre-season training.  Bring your friends!

Barbra Streisand meets the parents

We never miss an opportunity to show off our robot Barbra Streisand (Kasey III) to our school community. We were out in full force on Grade nine profile night, with a display in the main hall of our school for grade nine students and their parents.

20111005-124253.jpg
Through these types of demonstrations we make our community aware of the exciting opportunities available at K.C.V.I. We recruit more families to join as members and mentors for our team, and start some very valuable conversations about potential sponsorship connections.

Thanks to everyone who came out to drive and operate our robot, and who gave driving lessons to the public. We look forward to many more demos in the future.

Recruiting for Robotics

We were pleased to participate in our school’s “clubs carousel” to show all grade 9s and new students what we’re all about.

20110925-121421.jpg
Some students we content to stand back and look at our robot, but others were eager to line up and learn how to drive.

20110925-121529.jpg
Some grade 9s know all about how much fun we have because they have older siblings on our team. We look forward to having our welcome meeting on Thursday!

Demo at Rideau Public School

Despite the rain, we packed up carpet, robot, and tubes and headed to Rideau Public School where we demonstrated our robot for most of their student body.

demo

Eager eyes watched as we maneuvered the robot around the floor, scoring tubes on our transportable scoring rack.

driving lessonsSome of the older students had a turn driving the robot, while the younger ones seemed more concerned about if the robot was alive, or if it was a boy or girl robot, and what its name was.

smilingTim was having such a good time teaching driving skills that he let us catch a smile on camera!

curiousSome of the grade 8s were very intrigued with how the robot was built, and they look forward joining our team next year.

One student was overheard saying with great excitement,  “Now I know for sure what school I’m going to next year!”

We enjoy this opportunity to ease the transition for some grade 8s by giving them something to look forward to when they get to KCVI.
