GTR East Practice Day

Our morning started off with breakfast at the hotel with team 2056.  We had an idea that they were there when we saw the parking lot!2056At breakfast we made sure that everyone had washed and put on their deodorant.  Our hotel has a deodorant vending machine!deodorantBreakfast was followed by a brief organizational meeting, and then the carpool caravan headed to UOIT for the tournament.hotelWe arrived to UOIT in the rain just in time to rush the stands for good scouting territory.  Of course we were behind our friends 1114, Simbotics, who are known for arriving early!line upWe got some really good seats to scout from today.  We will have to wake up pretty early to get these kinds of seats again tomorrow.standsWhile our pit crew got our robot ready for inspection and set up the pit itself, the scouts learned how to fill our their sheets, and heard about our database that we’re using this year. hat pinsOne of our parent mentors had a great idea last year in St. Louis, that we should give away buttons that are little knitted hats with 2809 on them.  From that point on patterns were made, and little hats were knit in many households.  We now have 1400 little hat pins!  Stop by and see us in the pit, or in the stands and get one–everyone needs a little purple spirit!

K-Bots are all over the place here today.  We’ve even got some K-Bots, and K-Bot mentor alumni in disguise as robot inspectors (yellow hats) and event volunteers.  Thanks to all volunteers who are involved in the event this weekend!

Our robot passed inspection early in the day, so we were able to get onto the field for a few practice matches.inspectionWe got onto the field and tried out a few things.  We shot a ball….shooting a ball…and balanced on a bridge with team 2056.  bridgeWe also learned that balancing a bridge looks easy, but in most cases is really difficult to do!calibrationAt lunch we calibrated our robot camera on the field…lunch…while others ate lunch.  Thanks so much to our parent mentors who arranged for a rather large Subway order for all 3 competition days.  Thanks to Subway for donating drinks to our team!qualitative scoutsOur scouting teams got into action in the afternoon visiting the pit areas and getting to know other teams a little better.  Scouts also watched each match and made notes on the progress of each robot.blue bearThe blue bear came to visit for part of the afternoon.  We’re looking forward to having a bit more spirit tomorrow when teams are dancing along to the music!practice fieldWe continued to work on our calibration and testing until the pits closed.  Tomorrow is looking like a very exciting day of matches.  Please have a look at the schedule to see when we’ll be playing.dinnerWe had a delicious dinner at Swiss Chalet this evening.  It’s lots of fun eating at restaurants, mostly because they have straws with wrappers, which are a big source of entertainment for our team.  “Straws are a weapon of mass destruction!”

"We had a hard core dinosaur phase"

Over dinner we learn so much about ourselves and each other.  One sibling pair expressed their early childhood fascination with dinosaurs….

I just ate 3 different kinds of animals today

And another pair of mentors contrasted a vegetarian lifestyle with one that strives to eat as many different animals as possible in any given day.

supportDespite our differences, we are bound together by our mutual interest in robots, science, technology and our team.  We are there to support each other through the tired moments, and even share a chair at dinner if needed.  Hugs and jokes are plentiful, and that makes our days brighter and our team closer.  We’re realizing now how tight knit we have become!

Other teams (students, teachers and parents) have complimented us on how well our team is working together and how friendly and polite we are.  Our hotel manager also complimented us on our excellent conduct!

We’re in Oshawa!

After school we packed up all of our belongings and set off for Oshawa.  We want to thank our sponsors for all they have done to get us to this point.  sponsorsWe proudly display our sponsor boards in our pit at competition.packingWe rented a trailer and filled it up with boxes….blue bearwith tools, and with our blue bear outfit.tool boxWe have a lot of tools!robotAnd here’s our robot….in the bag and ready to go.hotelWhen we got to the hotel we had to sign a “no party agreement”.  Too bad EVERYTHING at robotics is a party!East Side MarioWe had a lovely dinner at East Side Marios.  Thanks so much to our parent mentors for arranging our food for this trip.  It was a very good choice!strawsIf you can’t tell, we’re all a little bit excited for competition season to begin.  We’ll be up bright and early to get good seats for tomorrow.  Follow us on twitter @frc2809 throughout the day for updates on our progress.

Competition T-Shirt Order

Hello K-Bots, it is the time to order shirts for competitions. t-shirt order

Order deadline Wednesday Feb.22nd

Each team member must have one new T-Shirt with the current sponsor logos on it.  These shirts will be worn on the final day of competition for pictures etc.

Purple shirts from past years may be worn on other competition days.

New team members need to order 2 team shirts.  We don’t want to be “the stinky team”.  Friends and family can also order shirts.

This is the only time we’ll be ordering this season.  Shirts will cost less than $15 each (cash or cheque, made out to KCVI).  Since price depends on the number of shirts we’re ordering, we’ll confirm the price after the order deadline: Wednesday Feb 22nd at 8PM.

Orders must be submitted online using this form.

FILL THIS OUT PLEASE K-BOTS!

What would you like to do at competition this season?  Please read this form and fill it out before the end of the day on Sunday.

If you do not fill in the form, please do not complain about competition roles.  This is your chance to give us input.

Food Factor: FLL Tournament

Our tournament today was a big success!  We arrived a little bleary eyed at 7 AM, but by 8 AM everyone was ready to go and our school gym was buzzing with activity as teams arrived and set up, robots were tested on practice tables.

All morning teams presented their projects, robots, and core values for judging panels.

judgingThe hallways were buzzing with excited teams, coaches and parents.  For some teams this was their very first FLL competition!

Each team was assigned a K-Bot to be their guide for the day.  We love making connections with our FLL friends and we look forward to seeing them in the next few years at competition, and eventually when they join us in high school!

We showed our past season’s robot and offered driving lessons to our younger friends.  Many parents and judges were really intrigued with what we can accomplish during a 6 week build season.  We invited them to come and visit us sometime in January to see us in action!

Along with the FLL tournament, we also had a Jr. FLL Expo happening at the same time.  Our two teams were the Mini W.A.F.F.L.E.S. from Kingston, and the GermBusters from Brampton Ontario.  Many thanks to the GermBusters for making the trip to Kingston to join us.  We hope to see them again next year!

Our good friend the blue bear showed up to help pump up the crowd.  The blue bear got lots of hugs from young and old alike.

quote

robotics is the gateway drug for our future!

Thanks to all of the K-Bots who helped to keep things running smoothly today, from set up and registration, timing, cuing, working with FLL teams, working with judges, driving our robot, monitoring practice tables, being referees MCs DJs and the blue bear, cooking lunch, moving tables, writing thank you cards, taking great photographs, operating video cameras, making slideshows, dancing with enthusiasm, talking with media, and helping with all of the clean up.  Special thanks to Christine for organizing the entire event.

See you all again on Thursday when we’ll go to Transformix for a tour (time is not yet confirmed).  Permission forms are needed to go on this field trip.  Parent drivers would be greatly appreciated too–there are volunteer driver forms to fill out before driving.

FLL Tournament Preparations

Tonight we gathered in the evening, after all of the sports teams had finished their games, and we transformed our school gymnasium into an FLL tournament venue.setting up

We set up the tournament tables and practice tables in the gym…

Quality control was very important for this job!

It was a big job to make sure that each of the rooms had all of the required information for each set of judges.

organization

We were thankful to the many K-Bots who gave up their Friday evening to help set up–many hands do make light work!  Thanks also to Richard, one of our mentors from Transformix Engineering, who came out to help.  He’s getting excited for build season, just like we all are.

mentors

We worked together to make sure our robot was demo ready, and looking great!  Everyone headed home and straight to bed.  We’re expected to be at our posts at 7:00AM tomorrow.

We’re on Popular Mechanics

Look at this!  Popular Mechanics has talked about our roller claw design on their website.  They showed a video of the claw in action.  It’s exciting to be getting all of this media exposure.  popmech

We’re on CNN

A photograph and caption about our team is featured in the photo slideshow on the CNN website!

We’re excited about this, and we’ll all be looking forward to watch the documentary “Don’t Fail Me: Education in America” by Soledad O’Brien which airs this Sunday, May 15th at 8pm.  Here’s a video trailer to give you an idea of what you’ll see Sunday night.

Headed to Championships!

To get from Kingston to St. Louis we drive across Ontario, cross into the USA then pass through Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and finally arrive in Missouri.  The trip takes 16.5 hours of solid driving time.  Needless to say, we’ll be taking a few stretch breaks and meal breaks along the way.

routeWe’re thrilled to be going to St. Louis, and to be playing at the Edward Jones Dome in the NEWTON division with all of these teams.edward jones dome

Have a look at the field webcasts provided by NASA.

Information about all divisions, match schedules, results and other FIRST Championship information is available here.  Note:  St. Louis is in the Central Timezone.  If the schedule says that we’ll play at 10:00AM in St. Louis, tune in at 11:00AM Kingston time.

Of course, we’ll update this blog, and our twitter when internet is available.

GTR Day 2 2011

It was an early start this morning! We learned a few things during breakfast….It’s possible to feed 46 people bagels in half an hour as long as you have many many bagels, many many toasters and a lot of cooperation. We only blew one fuse in the process!

breakfast

all of us are feeling a bit blurry before 7AM

We got to the Hershey Center early enough to get our favourite seats in the stands. Our scouts are keen to see all of the action, so reserving the prime seats is a priority!

morning

Between matches, we were able to show our spirit by cheering and dancing and being generally excited about the competition. It’s lots of fun to watch your robot do AMAZING things! Other robots are doing some pretty amazing things too. The competition is pretty challenging.

excited

Here we are attempting to score an ubertube in autonomous mode. We got pretty good at it over the course of the day! Some of the other teams can reliably score not only one, but TWO ubertubes! It’s fantastic to see.

ubertubesBetween matches, our robot gets worked on by our expert pit crew. It’s pretty crowded and busy in there. Judges and safety officials, robots, mentors, students, families and friends are all milling about, looking around, repairing robots, changing batteries, lining up for matches, strategizing with alliances etc. The pit is a fun place to visit, specially when the robot is working well.

repairsThis morning our Chairman’s team did a great job with their presentation. They explained to judges all about what we do that makes our team special, how we work to get others interested in science and technology, and how our team is building a strong foundation for the future.

tailgateOur excellent lunch plan was a success today. Thanks to Gord for organizing the sandwich run! We had a tailgate party in the parking lot.

award
Our matches went really well today. We won 5 and lost 3, some were really close games! We have two more games tomorrow in the morning before alliance selection begins. At the end of the first day we’re happily sitting in 8th place, and we’re excited to announce that we won the Innovation in Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation.award winners

After dinner our scouts gathered with the Cyberfalcons to discuss our top 24 list for alliance selection, and the minibot team got to work on more modifications to the deployment system. We’re looking forward to seeing it work tomorrow morning.
