Day 9: Random Progress

Day 9: We had a photo shoot today for our Kare-bots.  We’ve been knitting them for our outreach project.

photo shoot

You can knit them too!  We’re going to send them as a packing material for medical or other aid supplies going to Africa or Haiti.  They are super awesome and lots of fun to play with.

photoshoot

Aren’t they so cute?

We’re working on learning the game rules.  There are lots and lots of rules!rules

It was really exciting for us to get a postcard today!  Thanks JNo!

postcardWe had a really big CAD party and at the end of it our virtual robot is almost finished… Oh my gosh, it’s just like Tron!

Introducing the Kare-bots

kare-botsKare-bots provide comfort for children in recovering nations, they also reduce environmental waste and provide a practical alternative to traditional packing protection for medical or other aid supplies. The dolls will allow our team to connect with children and spread a love of robots all over the world.

Day 8: What…It’s Day 8 Already???

Day 8:  Today started off with writing sponsor e-mails. We have had some workshops on how to do this over the last few days, and we sent some off this morning!
emailsWe’ve continued working on a top-secret knitting projects, and we’ve started some hats for some of our newer members.

knitting
Some people have been very creative in where they choose to knit… when we asked Sam why he was under the desk, he blamed “corporate America”.

Another knitting photo of our top secret project:  Watch it grow over time!

progressOur programmers have been working very hard, using our test chassis to decide how the controls will be laid out.programmersAfter modifying things, it’s really fun to drive the robot around!
programmersWe held a meeting right before lunch to discuss our latest outreach activity… we’re going global!  After our meeting we ate a delicious lunch.  Thanks parents for keeping us so happy and healthy!  We couldn’t survive our hectic build season without your support.
lunchAfter lunch, we split up into groups to work on various tasks that needed to be completed before the end of today.

field

Some of us worked on finishing up the field and setting it up in the gym…
field…While others worked on CADing various parts of the robot, including the drive train and some other ideas we’re working on.

CAD

We’re doing CAD in small groups, and in bigger groups too.

After consulting some of last year’s parts, we’re almost ready to order the things we will need to start building.
researchWe’ll meet next at the usual time after school on Monday. Enjoy your day off to relax and do your homework!

Day 7: Field Completion

Day 7:  Progress is coming along in almost all our super-special-awesome mini-projects, especially the knitting.

and had a minor debate on whether the note written on them said “No humans on bridge” or “No, humans on bridge”

balance

note: be careful to keep fingers and feet clear of the bridge!

It’s ok ’cause our status as human might be debatable!  We worked hard to reinforce the bridge so we can try to put several robots on it in the future.

woodshop

After the bridge was completed, we got to work cutting wood for the fenders.  Thanks Mr. Firth for helping us out in the shop tonight!

For snack today we had delicious cookies!

In the back of our work space,  we got to have a little class on the function of sensors…sensors

…which led us to looking at the math associated with sensors.

After dinner we made great headway on the CAD for our drive train.  We are working as a group, putting the CAD together on the big screen.  It is really interesting to see the process unfold, and to understand the logic behind creating the robot design.

group cad

While work was taking place, some of us worked on organizing the workroom.  We are going to have a renovation soon, and we’d like to start keeping our files organized, both to save time, and to keep things neat.

Day 4: Prototype testing and decision making

Work started today at lunch time for some!  Our goal of getting a prototype robot to traverse the barrier had a deadline of 6PM, and we were determined to make that happen.

lunch time

After school, we got some more wood for our field construction team…..

lumber

…we’ve made great headway on backboards and are ready to assemble a barrier and bridge over the next few days.  Our goal is to have essential field pieces built soon so we can begin to test robot designs on them.field

Measure twice and cut once!  We’ve been doing a pretty careful job so far.

cad

Our CAD enthusiasts have completed the CAD of the field today!  We’re going to have so many more CAD jobs in the next week.  We will be preparing technical drawings of our final robot design and parts for fabrication.

test chassis

After a few hours of work this afternoon our simple chassis was driving.  Testing a chassis alone was not enough though.  We were curious about weight distribution and how tippy our robot might be.  test chassisWe decided to suspend a weight from a meter above our robot to mimic anything we might build up there, and then give it a try.  We installed plywood chain guards to keep us all safe.

After ramming our test robot into a few barriers to test how it tipped, it was looking a little worse for wear.

Back to the drawing board we go….

drawing board

By the end of our meeting today we have made progress in deciding the key configuration of our robot.  Now begins the fun of designing the details.  You never know where ideas come from.  We prototype and experiment with some interesting and unconventional materials.

ideas

We had the first meeting of the Chairman’s video team.  We’re starting earlier this year to make sure that we get the footage that we need without a feeling of panic!

video meeting

We have started several top secret knitting projects this build season.  They include a lot of creative design, and incorporating technology in unconventional ways.

knittingSome of us spent a great deal of time doing calculations, doing research and gathering our materials.

ball winder

"Didn't we design a better way to do this last year?"

We taught a few new members how to knit today.  When they were upset about making mistakes Paige had some good advice.  We think it applies to building robots too!

“You learn more sometimes from failing, than you do from doing things right” -Paige, grade 10

Every day we work hard to balance homework and robotics.  Sometimes that is best done alone…

homework

…other times we gather to have group physics parties!

homework

Tomorrow we meet from 2:45-10PM.  Dinner is provided.  See everyone there!

Day 2: In Which We Get Organized

Our group was hard at work bright and early today!  We have so many things to accomplish, and so little time, we need to make each day count.  The big group got broken down into smaller groups to start tackling our immediate goals of the day.

We started the day by doing lots of talking and planning; devising a plan of attack is a great way to start the build season.

chairman's

Our Chairman’s group has been working hard for a long time.  We’re now consolidating everything….and keeping a close eye on the mid-Feb. deadline!

programming group

Our keen programmers, and programmers-to-be, got to work.  This year we’re starting early, and starting from scratch with our programming.  It’s great to see so many students eager to sink their teeth into the code!

success!

A little later in the day, the programmers were thrilled to announce the success of their code that they wrote themselves!  We’re looking forward to learning lots more over the next few days.

mechanical

It was full steam ahead on the mechanical team until we read the bumper rules once more.  Teams: READ THE BUMPER RULES!!  We’re generating interesting ideas, and identifying challenges, and discussing how to solve our problems.  Eventually we needed a full group meeting to rank priorities of what we want our robot to do.  discussions

Part of our goal is to CAD things thoroughly this year to make sure everything fits together well.  We made a CAD drawing of the field today.

CAD

In our down time we knocked off a few thank you cards for meals and favours received in the past week.  We are so grateful to the support of our families and our school.

thankyou

At lunch time some of us ate sandwiches….lunch

…others ate potluck leftovers….and others ate some yummy chili.  We are so thankful to the families that provide food for us during our long build season days!

lunch

Discussions never stop.  We’re always working on robot building strategy, even while eating!

Today, some of us focused on building components of the field.  We need field pieces so we can test robot designs and sensors.  We followed the technical drawings, and worked hard…measuring….measuring….measuring…

field

…and finally cutting out the pieces.

field

By the end of the day we had build a rather impressive structure!fieldIt’s nice to see things coming together so quickly!  We look forward to making more progress on the field pieces tomorrow too.

Haotian

We were excited to have a K-Botics alumni visit today!  We could legitimately ask almost everyone in the room…”Have you met Haotian?”

K-Bots: Tomorrow we’re meeting after school until 10:00PM.  Dinner will be provided.  Bring snacks, and be sure to take time out to do your homework (maybe do it at lunch!)

Super Top Secret Design Challenge

Our meeting this week was busy and productive.  We debriefed about our bottle drive experience, and plan to hold another one that is bigger and better in the spring–so parents….please save your empties for us!

Look who showed up today!  Remi….who is modelling our “Apron of Doom”–if you do not clean up, you must wear it! (here are some classic apron pictures)  Remi is working on putting together an order of hoodies.  Think about whether you are interested in purchasing a team hoodie this year.  Prices and designs will be coming your way soon!

remiWe discussed the plans for the FIRST LEGO league tournament, and Jr. FIRST LEGO League Expo that we’re hosting on December 3rd.  We look forward to lots of our K-Bots volunteering to help out with set up on December 2nd in the evening, and with the running of the event on December 3rd.  We’ll be hard at work by 8 until probably 5 or 6.  There’s lots of volunteer hours available!  There are many jobs for students to do, from helping with registration, being good tour guides of our school for all of the visiting teams, cooking a delicious pasta lunch for our judges, and even taking a turn being the blue bear to help lead cheering!  For more information please contact Christine.

CADOur group split up for rotations of CAD tutorial work–some of us are getting really good at the practical applications of CAD.

CAD superstar

Others are getting really good at the impractical applications of CAD.  Meet Geoffrey the dragon!  GeoffreyWe held a brainstorming rotation for Chairman’s report ideas, and activities we should engage in over the year to help our community and build up our team.  We also walked everyone through the STIMS registration and online consent forms for FIRST.  Students and parents both must complete the process for the permission forms to be complete.brainstorming

Our beta testers were busy getting Barbra Streisand (Kasey III) up and running, as an important beta-testing deadline is coming up next week.

betatestingThe remaining station was a super top secret design challenge. Groups had 30 minutes and a variety of materials (wheels, newspaper, straws, plastecine, skewers, cardboard, wood, screws, saws, measuring devices, and lots of tape) to construct a vehicle that was powered by a balloon that could travel the farthest down the school hallway.

During the 30 minutes, each group needed to plan, prototype, construct, test and modify their design, as well as demonstrate good communication and teamwork skills.

discussing building

Since each group worked in isolation, the vehicles produced were unique.  Some had wheels, some didn’t.  Some used an inflated balloon, others used it as a slingshot.

balloon on steroids

that balloon's on steroids!

slingshot

If the car breaks, and part of the car goes the farthest, it still counts....right?

the real car is Sam

The real car is Sam....the balloon is just the distraction!

no wheels

look mom--no wheels!

We all learned a lot during this challenge.  It’s important to use time wisely–to allow time for testing and modifications–to plan before building–and to bring spare parts to the competition.  We had lots of fun, even if the vehicles did not travel too far down the hallway!  This might be a challenge we’ll revisit in the future.

Extravaganza Preparations

Our meeting today was quite a productive one!  We’re planning the final details for our end of year party taking place June 4th from 2-4 pm at KCVI.

All K-Bots are expected to attend (wear your purple and your hats).  Invite your family and friends to come and see the progress we made during our 6 week build, and hear the stories of competition.  We’d like to thank families for supporting all our our team members with dinners and carpools and lots of smiles this past season.  Parents, come celebrate with the rest of the extended K-Botics family!

We’d like to recognize the contribution of our mentors who dedicate 6+ weeks of their life to build season and beyond.  Mentors, please feel free to invite family and friends to see what you’ve been up to when you’re not at home.

The financial support of our many sponsors is what makes our build season possible.  This year we required more money to get to the Championships, and our sponsors stepped in and helped make that possible.  We have extended invitations to all of our sponsors to join us on June 4th and we hope that many will be able to attend and see the amazing things that are done with their support.

Over our 3 years we have certainly build a strong foundation upon which we will continue to build for many years to come.

GTR Day 2 2011

It was an early start this morning! We learned a few things during breakfast….It’s possible to feed 46 people bagels in half an hour as long as you have many many bagels, many many toasters and a lot of cooperation. We only blew one fuse in the process!

breakfast

all of us are feeling a bit blurry before 7AM

We got to the Hershey Center early enough to get our favourite seats in the stands. Our scouts are keen to see all of the action, so reserving the prime seats is a priority!

morning

Between matches, we were able to show our spirit by cheering and dancing and being generally excited about the competition. It’s lots of fun to watch your robot do AMAZING things! Other robots are doing some pretty amazing things too. The competition is pretty challenging.

excited

Here we are attempting to score an ubertube in autonomous mode. We got pretty good at it over the course of the day! Some of the other teams can reliably score not only one, but TWO ubertubes! It’s fantastic to see.

ubertubesBetween matches, our robot gets worked on by our expert pit crew. It’s pretty crowded and busy in there. Judges and safety officials, robots, mentors, students, families and friends are all milling about, looking around, repairing robots, changing batteries, lining up for matches, strategizing with alliances etc. The pit is a fun place to visit, specially when the robot is working well.

repairsThis morning our Chairman’s team did a great job with their presentation. They explained to judges all about what we do that makes our team special, how we work to get others interested in science and technology, and how our team is building a strong foundation for the future.

tailgateOur excellent lunch plan was a success today. Thanks to Gord for organizing the sandwich run! We had a tailgate party in the parking lot.

award
Our matches went really well today. We won 5 and lost 3, some were really close games! We have two more games tomorrow in the morning before alliance selection begins. At the end of the first day we’re happily sitting in 8th place, and we’re excited to announce that we won the Innovation in Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation.award winners

After dinner our scouts gathered with the Cyberfalcons to discuss our top 24 list for alliance selection, and the minibot team got to work on more modifications to the deployment system. We’re looking forward to seeing it work tomorrow morning.

K-Botics is in the SPOTLIGHT!

We’re pleased to be featured on the front page of the Limestone District School Board website!  Slowly but surely everyone is hearing about what our robotics team is up to.  It’s nice to spread our news to the whole school board now.

Today we worked on our minibot and deployment system.  Things have really come a long way over the past week.  We’re looking forward to great results at GTR.

minibot

Our human player has had some fun in the gym.  We’re so lucky to have mentors that are keen to be the “human player coach”, and run practice sessions like this one.

human player practice

Our Chairman’s crew has had amazing support as well.  Daily practices have led to a really great presentation. We are excited to see what the judges at GTR will think of it.

chairmans

Along with all of the robotic preparations, we’ve also done lots of organizing for our weekend adventure.  We have packed our bagels for our team breakfasts.

bagels

132--That's a lot of bagels!

Tomorrow we’re getting things ready to be packed in the van.  It’s hard to believe that there are only THREE sleeps left!
